I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. Not because there was nothing I found appealing, but because I felt passionate about too many things. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

In four years when I read this I honestly won’t be surprised if nothing really changes. I can’t see myself changing in any major ways. I will always love sports, hunting, fishing guns and anything that has four wheels. I sure I will still not understand the point of reading books for school and writing long papers about things that I don’t exactly care or relate to me. Although, in order for this letter to do it’s job in four years I need to start from the beginning.…

I first began looking at colleges my freshman year of high school. First, I looked up schools I thought seemed interesting and had majors I thought I may want to develop and pursue a career in. My list started off with about 20 schools and by sophomore year I would need to break it down to about 10. I began to visit these schools 1 by 1 and saw the type of programs they had to offer. I began at colleges such as Wake Forest, Clemson, and University of Tennessee at Knoxville. But I could tell that these schools just weren’t for me. My mother became fed up because I did not find interest in the schools I thought I would fall in love with.…

My career goal is to have the ability to encourage, motivate, inspire, and stamp the lives of young teenagers. I chose to go into the career cluster of Education and Training. My career goal is to be a High School teacher and an Athletic Coach. I want to be considered one of the “cool teachers” that all the students go to with the school gossip and personal problems, but at the same time I want to be a teacher/coach that takes things seriously. I believe I would be successful pursuing teaching and coaching due to the fact they both share my interest of working with kids and being in charge. I also tend to believe with my grandmother and my mother also being teachers, it influenced my decision because…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

My high school graduating class consisted of 66 students, so obviously everyone knew everyone and unfortunately everyone’s business. When I was a junior, a well-known and liked senior boy had a very public breakup with his girlfriend of 3 years. They had met as freshmen and were expected to marry after finishing school. The next day he drove his car at what police estimated in excess of 100 miles per hour into a concrete railroad bridge that crossed the main road out of town. After that, the bridge became known as Burkett’s bridge and I was never able to drive through it without getting a chill and goosebumps on my arms. It’s been over 40 years since high school, and it is amazing how often I still think of Bobby and his…

Before I led the group of underclassmen, I had a two day training in how to become a great leader and know how to express my skills. As a leader, I showed many skills such as communication, leadership, and patience. I served as a mentor to these fifteen freshman by giving them advice and encouraging them to get involved. Throughout all my years as a high school student, I aspired to do something extremely beneficial to my community. Volunteering here and there for various clubs did not fulfill this ambition. After attending various programs that encouraged active initiative, such as UNC Catalyst Conference and NC Governor’s School, a self-realization occurred that urged me to finally be a “catalyst for change.” I am now the founder and manager of a student-based nonprofit called Musicians United to Support Incredible Causes (M.U.S.I.C.). The objectives include assisting the disadvantaged, benefiting higher level organizations, and expanding the reputation of music education.…
