Hypertension or otherwise known as high blood pressure is a term that millions of us are familiar with. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention “more than 65 million individuals have hypertension” ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). Blood pressure is defined as the force of blood against the artery walls as it circulates through the body. It can cause health problems if it stays high for a long time. It is measured using two numbers. The first, systolic, number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The second, diastolic, number represents the pressure in your vessels when your heart rests between beats ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). A healthy blood pressure reading is lower than 120/80mmHg and pre-hypertension is between 120/80mm Hg and 139/89mmHg. Stage one hypertension is between 140/90mm Hg and 159/99mm Hg and stage two hypertension is a reading of 160/100mm Hg or higher ("About High Blood Pressure", 2012). High blood pressure raises your risk for heart disease and stroke and is one of leading causes of death in the United States. It is often called the "silent killer" because many people don 't realize they have it and often has no warning signs or symptoms ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). High blood pressure, if left untreated, can cause severe damage to the body 's organs, including the brain, heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Risk factors for hypertension include: increasing age, male, race (African Americans, Hispanics), diabetes, family history, high sodium diet, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol, and tobacco use. Heart disease, technically known as cardiovascular disease (CVD), is the number one killer of African Americans. Cardiovascular disease is the narrowing of arteries due to the build-up of atherosclerosis, or plaque, in the walls of arteries (Heart.org). This narrowing of the blood vessels and arteries causes the blockage of oxygen and blood supply needed for proper function of the heart. African Americans are at much higher risk for heart disease because of socioeconomic status, cultural habits, and poor health services. Heredity is also a risk of heart disease among blacks. According to the American Heart and Stroke Association, 44.8% of black men and 47.3% of black women have cardiovascular disease. There were 46,819 deaths of black men and 49,819 deaths of black women in 2008 (Heart.org). Heart disease is preventable and can be reduced significantly if heredity plays a role as a risk factor. The target group of the population intervention is African American women ages twenty-five and thirty-four, lower to middle class, in Birmingham, AL. When performing the intervention in this population subset the measurable objectives are the increase of the women who check their blood pressure on a regular basis and can voice whether their blood pressure is normal or high. Another measurable objective is that women with preexisting hypertension make a change in the following areas increase in physical activity, smoking cessation, body mass index, decrease in sodium intake or saturated fats, take medications as prescribed by doctor and regular doctor visits. Personal responsibility to me is acknowledging responsibility for actions and decisions made, accepting the consequences that may follow from them, and understanding that others around will be involved. Every day choices or decisions are made from experiences taught or from experiences learned. The only choices people want to be responsible for are the decisions considered honorable or right. People also make bad decisions but do not want to be accountable for them. In life the choices made will guide the way people live whether responsible or irresponsible. Only be responsible for he/she decisions. PERSEF1’s Module 1 was good. We were given the chance to create our own sharing groups with people we are comfortable with, and I am sure that helped in so many ways. I was able to express myself to them freely, because they are my friends, and I know that they will not judge me based on whatever I have to say.
