    Health Care Summary

    • 2 Pages

Health Care Administration is a profession I found myself drawn to. Early in my career I believed I wanted to be an attorney. As I entered college and began doing research, working with an attorney, I found that I had a knack for research and talking with people so I became a paralegal. When I graduated in 1999 as a paralegal, I fell on hard times, had children, but I did a lot of freelance work for different attorneys in the area. At this point, health care was not something I was looking to as a profession. In 2001, I came across a health care professional and after talking with her she said how she sees the potential within me to be in health care. At this point I was offered a job as a secretary within the infectious disease department at one of the major hospitals in Mississippi. This job started my 10 year journey to the introduction of my career in health care. As years went on, I realized that my calling is health care but I was confused as to what I actually wanted to do. In 2007, I entered and was accepted into the LPN program. I made it all the way to the last semester and I realized that health care administration was the key for me. Upon my more research I found University of Phoenix Health Care Administration Program and I have loved it from day one.…

At first I was very nervous to apply as a volunteer and had doubts about being hired. After a long process of applications, interviews, and trainings, I was assigned to work at 6-CD on Geriatric floor. While I was volunteering there I met with different people, nurses, doctors, and pharmacy technicians. Seeing the pace of work they work in made me realize how important it is to work in healthcare. For me, the most significant issue was to get the used to patients who have passed away. I have seen a situation where a nurse and a doctor telling a family member that their father has passed away. At first I hesitated and asked myself if I am brave enough to do the same in future. As I volunteered there I realized I got used to everything, I was able to handle…

Throughout lower and middle school at lab, the buddy program was always my favorite. I loved the connections and friendships it made, and I was always excited about the challenge of being a big buddy. Because I was always one of the quieter, gentler people in my class, I was often paired with the shyest child in the class we had been partnered with. I felt as if I had the potential to begin to understand them, maybe even a bit more than some of classmates, because I had been very similar to them. I had started out at Lab afraid of teachers and nervous around my peers, something I was constantly drawing on as I tried to make my buddy open up. I was paired with a preschooler who had a fear of older buddies, as his past experience with them had…

I was able to learn many things about myself and this field as I got deeper into the healthcare world. I spent four summers volunteering for a Hospital near my house, and although it was not always the most pleasant experience it taught me valuable lessons that I will always carry with me through all my journeys through healthcare. All the things I saw, all the people gave me different perspective on what I was embarking on. Everyone you see at a hospital has a different story, whether they are a patient, family member, or staff. Everyone is telling a different story and different struggle. If you go in with a big heart and clear mind you could easily make a day of someone without you even knowing. This also taught me that you cannot be weak stomached. All the things you will encounter, and come across in health care can turn your stomach, but no matter the story and circumstance everyone should be treated with the same respect and care. But with a strong heart you will be able to treat anyone and anything you come across.…

The explanation of teamwork and collaboration is the effectiveness of communication between nurses and other interdisciplinary team members, that promotes open communication channels and demonstration of mutual respect in order to obtain the appropriate resources for patients. These characteristics help to achieve the highest level of quality care for patients. One major quality that is essential to teamwork and collaboration is communication. Schyve (2009) stated, “good communication is integral to high quality patient care” (p.7). It is my opinion that this a factual statement. This approach to leadership is quite interesting and has influenced me because in the latter part of my career in the Navy, I see this type of leadership style more and more. Many people may think of the military being as part of a big team; and they are correct in many cases, but there is a lot of individualism as well. It was not until technology and increased tracking of policies and programs that I started to notice and be a part of project management, task force, and improvement teams. This was not commonplace in probably the first half of my career. Northouse (2012) emphasized additional types; “Examples of such teams include project management teams, task forces, work units, standing committees, quality teams, and…
