In seventeen years of life, I finally came to realize that my family lived a hard life in America. They came to America not knowing how to speak English and struggling to find jobs to raise a family. I come to realize why my parents and family pushes me to work hard in school. It was important to my parents and family that their children not have to face struggles they faced; they wanted more for their children. Listening to my parents telling me about how African American people in Africa struggle through life because of poverty. It made me realize that I cannot let myself down and live such a life. I had a responsibility to live up to my potential. Even through all these struggles that my parents face each and every day, they still manage to save some money to raise their children.
Since I was a little girl my parents would always encourage me to do well in school so that I would be the first person in the family to go to college because since I was a little girl I really wanted to go to college. Ever since I went to school, I always dreamed of being an elementary teacher. The place I come from determines the person I am and who will I be in the future. The environment, which I consider to be the people around me, such as my family and friends, inspired me to become the person I am today, someone who wants a successful future. I grew up around people who believed that I had a potential to be better, which made me want to be better as a person. My parents had inspired me to stay in school because they wanted me to accomplish my dream. My school has also inspired me, I am trying my best to my aspiration as a teacher by getting good grades. My community that surrounds me is my friends and family that has motivated me to be the person who I am today. I am a lucky person to have friends and family that care about me so much. My hopes and dreams of being a teacher have inspired me to study and learn a lot. Raised in an open-minded household, as a child and

I believe Margaret Drabble’s statement, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” to be quite true. Throughout history, people of all ages have wanted to be accepted and belong to a group rather than look at the facts and measure what is true and false. It is very evident in our society today that not only do we want to be accepted and belong, but we also are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequences turn out to be. I agree with Drabble’s statement and believe that it is true all around the world. If you were to step outside our society and look back at it objectively, I can assure you that you would see evidence of this.…

Many people in my life have prepared me for my future and have taught me how to handle any obstacle thrown my way. My parents have inspired me to never settle for anything but the best, and have taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Both of my parents came from families without a strong financial basis or a stronghold of people who believed that they could excel; moreover, this led my parents to becoming doctors and providing support in every aspect for my sister and I. My parents’ determination has led to my belief in the veracious message: nothing is going to be handed to you because you must work to make something happen. As I have gotten older and realize the little time I have left sheltered by my parents, this idea has prepared me for the real world due to the fact that I know not to take anything for granted, but to work for what I want to accomplish in life.…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been living under the influence of something more potent than alcohol or drugs and it’s been addicting! As a third culture kid I’ve been raised “under the influence” of varying cultures for my entire life and have had some tremendous life experiences such as watching volcano ash fall from the sky after an eruption and listening to the call to prayer of different religions in several countries. My nonconventional upbringing has shaped who I am and will continue to do so.…

My writing process usually begins the day I find out I have a writing assignment. Depending on the type of paper and topic, I read through the material and let my mind brainstorm on it for a day or so. For example, I had a psychology research paper due last semester with a multitude of topics to choose from. The first thing I did was read through the topics and make sure I fully understood what each one meant. After a day to mull over my options, I made my choice and began creating my writing plan.…

I learned to overcome obstacles because I had so many cultural barriers to fitting in, and by observing the challenges my parents endured coming into a new country. I learned to work hard because my parents were strict on me. I learned independence because I couldn’t always ask my parents everything when they were getting to know things themselves; I learned to reach out to others. I learned to be myself and discover my own path when fitting in didn’t work. Due to my background, I want to make a difference by showing others that their circumstances do not define them. My first step in making this difference is to begin with myself, having acknowledged that the circumstances by which I began my education will not define how I finish this…

When the term ‘self-harm’ is mentioned, of what do you think? Depressing thoughts; suicidal victims? You don’t think of me, do you?
