Personal Essay.

Throughout this essay I will discuss why I am choosing to seek a college degree, my learning style based on results of recent surveys, and why I feel that those surveys are true. All people are different. Many people have different reasons for attending college; some may have the same reasons. My reasons for attending college are simple. To better my future for my family, and to broaden my knowledge, and skills in Environmental Science. A long term goal I have set for myself after finishing college is to become a State Game Warden. Game Wardens enforce laws to protect all fish and game species from illegal poachers, trappers, and fishermen. Although I may lack the experience in this field; having a college degree will prove that I have the knowledge and skills to fulfill this position. Becoming a Game Warden, also know as a Peace Officer is a very rigorous job. Often dealing with armed suspects; a career in this field is often unattainable without a degree. To even be considered a candidate in most states a wildlife or criminal justice degree is required. In this career it is beyond important to know and understand wildlife management inside and out. However, a long training process is also required. Before I get to far ahead of myself I need to know and understand myself inside and out. I’ll never be able to finish college if I am not completely comfortable with my learning style, and how it will help my along the way. There are many different types of learning styles. Basically I need to know and understand “my” learning style to the fullest. Ones learning style can’t just be given to them at birth, nor can it be taught. Believe it or not most children’s parents tend to tell them how to learn or do something based on what they know and what’s easiest for them to

Learning styles theory originated in the 1970’s and is based around the idea that people have preferences about how they like to learn. Theorists believe that each individual has a particular learning style that is best suited to them and allows them to collect and process information successfully in order to learn. The principle idea is that these learning style differ from one individual to the next and theorists argue that school teachers should incorporate these learning styles into their lessons so that student is catered for and everyone can learn effectively. Many educationalists believe that differences in learning styles are responsible for some student difficulties, for example, if a student is taught…

A learning style simply means how one learns and remembers information. Visual, auditory, or kinesthetic are the different learning styles. Learning styles can greatly go with personality, for instance a visual learner is usually neat and organized, while a kinesthetic learner is not so organized and impulsive. The visual learner thinks with pictures, likes to write things down, and can usually retain information easily. The auditory learner listens to information best and can usually verbalize and tell stories. Finally, the kinesthetic learner is a hands-on learner, likes to move around, and usually does not like to read directions. A teacher needs to recognize what type of learner each student is to understand how the student processes…

I learned about my preferred learning style by taking the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire. My style was kinetics and although i have the other skills as well. The other one ones are not as high as the kinetics skill. I like it better to have a more hands on experience. Like when i learned how to mow the lawn. I had to have someone show me how to operate the lawnmower. Showing me helps me to do things because once i can see how it’s done then i can do it as well.…

My educational goals and plans involve criminal justice, human services, and vet science. I went to Niacc for two years to try and get my Criminal Justice degree. I took several classes for it, but fell short of money to finish what I needed to graduate. I have always been interested in T.V. shows like Criminal Minds and Law and Order: SVU, 48 Hours, and Dateline. Those shows give me the idea of what I want to do and who I want to be like. I don't know the destined occupation in that career field that I want to do. I would be okay with any job in that career field though. I have much respect for police officers and fire fighters. I always told myself I want to be like them someday. I want to be a hero to someone. I want to go the extra…

Environmental Science has been an interest of mine since high school. I originally planned on studying environmental science upon graduation, but my life took a different turn when I went straight into the workforce and actually ended up in the construction industry. However, I chose this course in the hopes that not only would I fulfill my science credits, but I would take something away from it that I could apply to my everyday life, and I believe that I have come to have a deeper appreciation and desire to make postitive decisions to keep this planet and the environment that we live in as healthy as possible for future…

1 In the essay "A Brother's Murder," Brent Staples writes about his younger brother, Blake, who took a very different path in life than Staples did. 2 The essay starts with a phone call in which Staples learns that Blake has been murdered, shot six times by a former friend (517). The essay goes on to tell about the conditions in which Blake grew up. The neighborhood in which the brothers lived was violent, and young men grew into dangerous adults. Staples recalls a conversation he overheard there between two Vietnam veterans, in which one of them said how much he preferred to fight with young men from the inner city, who wear "their manhood on their sleeves." They weren't afraid to fight, believing that violence proved they were real men (518).…

The Harry Potter obsession is fueled by the charismatic characters and the ultimate fantasy that is colorfully painted throughout the novel. Children become hypnotized by the magic spells, the amazing conjuring of potions, the exciting adventures and creatures that could only be found in the deep realms of your mind. This is frightening to some, especially the crazy bible-thumping Christians, Radical Muslims, and crazy parents who are completely blind to the development in today’s youth. These are just a few examples of groups who disagree with this book. But why? Exactly what I said above, They believe that these books provide some sort of brainwashing method embedded deep within the pages of this book. They are afraid that children will convert to some of these “Witch-Craft” techniques and “rituals” which are commonly mentioned throughout the novels. Understandably, parents dislike the violence and death that is plagued though out the novel, but that adds a key element to the book, suspense and excitement.…

Immediately, when I turned sixteen I woke up in the morning and saw a pair of shinny silver keys sitting on my desk. I jumped up with excitement and rushed out the door wearing only my boxers, with the keys dangling in my hand. There it was: my brand new GMC Envoy, dark hunter green with a wax that could blind you. I stared at the car with excitement and admiration; it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and it was mine. I took it for a test drive around the block and opened it up on the highway only three blocks from my house. It had a V8 under the hood, black leather seats, a Bose sound system and enough horsepower to tow anything I desired. After my first test drive around the neighborhood, I picked up the phone and called my friends. I couldn't wait to show off my new car. With a quick thank you and a hug for my parents, I sprinted out the door. Hearing a faint be careful from my mom in the background, I slammed the front door and raced to my car.…

To begin on this journey and fully understand why college education is important to me, I must start in my childhood. My mother always enforced the importance of good grades and daily school attendance. As a child I was told about the negative effects that not finishing high school would have on my life. I was raised by a single mother that was a successful beautician. I guess with all the success that she had didn’t give me the impression that I needed a college education. I never imagined that college credits or a degree would keep me from reaching my dreams. Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs only to the people who prepare for it today.
