Personal Distress Assessment
On April 22nd I completed the Measuring Empathic Concern and Personal Distress instrument. This instrument is two part, measuring one’s empathetic concern as well as one’s reaction to personal distress. The average score for a female on the empathetic concern scale is 21.67. My score is a fourteen. The average score for a female on the personal distress scale is a 12.28. My score is an eleven. While my scores are lower than the average for my gender, I do not feel that this means I am less feeling than others. I choose to view these results as stating that I am able to detach myself from a situation and view it from a more neutral position than most. Nevertheless, some individuals view me as cold, unfeeling, or even hateful.
On a day to day basis my level of empathy and reactions to personal distress does not greatly affect me. However, I may have become used to situations that people with a higher score would see as unusual. An example of this is each of my friends have told me that before they got to know me they were intimidated by me, thought I was mean, or thought I was a ‘stone-cold bitch’. I do not find this odd because I know how I am. I know that some of my behaviors make me seem less than friendly. So I have been working towards

My friends which are always been moved by such things find my annoyance weird. However, I find it to be a pretty natural reaction. I mean if someone has never had an issue distancing themselves from a fictional character and now find it difficult to separate past emotions from the fictional current situation, I find annoyance at the situation to be understandable. Nevertheless, this might be because I am defending my own situation. My annoyance might be irrational and it might not be. My reactions might be part of getting older and developing a more empathetic view on life. Time will

Initial focus will be directed to assessing suicidal ideation, intent, and plan as a result of client’s recent psychiatric hospitalization. When discussing the impact of sexual abuse, it is difficult to identify what treatment will work efficiently given that “a number of factors appear to be associated with increased distress for survivors, which include molestation at an early age, frequency of abuse, incest by a biological parent, or the presence of force” (Briere & Elliot,1994, p. 63). Given the client’s symptoms and disclosure of abuse, it appears that he did not adequately process the trauma consequently creating an internal system in which the client “alternates between denial and…

Although versus my weaknesses which include being too sensitive, try to please everyone around me, and in situations where I will have to make a difficult decision I tend to freak out and do not know how to handle myself. The relationships I have with others around have been impacted both positively and negatively because of the way I am. The value of any relationship, either friends or family relations, is very important to me. Making sure the people I love know I care for them and would do anything for them is dire. I want them to understand putting them first is something I am willing to do, even if it requires doing something that could affect me horribly. Also, I tend to push people to let me know what is bothering them. For instance, if I saw a friend of mine was upset and something was bothering him/her I would repeatedly ask what is on their mind or what is bothering them and if I do not get a good response then I will take it to heart and feel as if I am a burden. This may sound extremely basic but sometimes it almost feels as if the times my friends need me I will be there for them no matter what but the one time I am actually upset no one wants to listen and it is me all alone trying to help myself. This is why I have to keep my thoughts to myself and not let my emotions get the better of me because the second I feel like I have someone who might care about…

First and foremost, Harrington & Daughetee (2014) stress the importance of knowing how I as a counselor feel about suicide. Competencies include knowledge and attitudes towards suicide as well as knowing if this client is a low, medium, or high risk, based on assessments (Harrington & Daughetee, 2014). My instinctive reaction to suicide is that I would want to help prevent it, if possible. I can understand my need to prevent it, equally as I can empathize with a client wanting to end their life to stop the pain. I can remain nonjudgmental and have authentic concern towards the client.…
