Personal Assessment of Your Learning Style
The process of learning is critically important in all human beings and understanding your individual learning style is key for effective learning. Learning styles is defined as the composite of characteristic cognitive, affective, and physiological factors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a learner perceives, interacts with, and responds to the learning environment (Keefe, 1979). Learning style is the way each person absorbs, understands and uses information.

Some of our learning style may be inherited. That is why we are born with certain traits that affect how we learn. Learning styles are therefore very unique to each individual and as is also the case with myself. However, in the course of our lives, we must adapt to a wide range of learning situations-- and it is very likely that some of these situations will not conform to our strengths. The trick is to continuously build on ones strengths while developing other strategies and skills.

I've learned that I am a Visual learner. Visual Learners learn best from what they see: diagrams, flowcharts, time lines, films, outlines and demonstrations. There are four benefits that come to mind regarding knowing and understanding ones learning style.

The first benefit is understanding how you learn best. Second benefit is knowing your learning style will allow you to identify study strategies that are helpful and those that are a waste of time. Third benefit is developing study strategies that are more effective based upon ones learning style resulting in greater academic success. The final benefit is less time is required when you study more effectively.

Learning style? Why would one need to know a learning style? There is a way for you to find out what type of learning style you have. The VARK learning style assessment tool, developed by Neil Fleming, is an assessment that can be taken to discover ones learning style. There are several learning styles; kinesthetic style; those who learn from hands on experience, auditory learners; a learning style of memorization by retaining what is heard (Blasen, n.d., para.1), visual learners; individuals who retain best through written language such as reading and writing ("VARK Questionnaire," 2011, para. 1), and last multimodal study strategy; a learning strategy of…

By recognising which group of learning style you belong to can benefit your personal development in many ways. I found out that I am auditory learner, rather than a visual or kinaesthetic learner. This means that I prefer and will work more efficiently through instructions and orders by my teachers or peers. It also means that I am quite able to remain focussed and attentive whilst I am being told what to do. Throughout this project, the fact that I was aware of my learning style improved my contribution and performance to the group. Whilst working in my group, I had to improve my confidence and communication skills. Because of my preference in auditory learning,…

I learned about my preferred learning style by taking the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire. My style was kinetics and although i have the other skills as well. The other one ones are not as high as the kinetics skill. I like it better to have a more hands on experience. Like when i learned how to mow the lawn. I had to have someone show me how to operate the lawnmower. Showing me helps me to do things because once i can see how it’s done then i can do it as well.…

One of the most important learning styles that aides my learning process is the visual learning style. Saying that, this learning style allows me to understand and multi task two things at the same time to solve a challenging problem. For example, in mathematics I can be adding and subtracting double denominators and changing fractions at the same time. This learning style helps me grasp the content better and enables me to enjoy it. At times it is necessary to combine more than one learning style to obtain the objective and yield a positive outcome in the learning process. When reading any new material, identifying…

Answering the questions from the Learning Style Inventory I established that my learning style is visual. This did not surprise me for I tend to remember faces rather than names and remembering information is vital when I have a textbook, visual aids, and written information (Bethel University, 2013, p. 19). Being a visual learner indicates that I learn with my eyes to retain the knowledge needed. This perhaps is beneficial because it requires me to understand my learning abilities to succeed in any aspect in life. In my personal and professional life being a visual learner provides me the ability to learn challenging and difficult tasks and skills. Taking on a class or subject would be simple by knowing that visual learners operate by observing…

My learning style is auditory. That means I learn by listening and hearing. To begin, I can be a better learner sitting where I can hear the teacher or whoever is presenting or speaking in the front of the room. If the teacher is teaching a lesson, I need to sit where I can hear her because I am an auditory learner. Furthermore, I am quiet in a group because I learn off of what people say and I am not a kinesthetic learner. Also, I use flashcards to help me remember things better. I record me saying them, and then I listen to them, then that helps me remember them. In the final analysis, I thought that I was a visual learner because I usually just pay attention by looking…

This shows what I am a visual learner and the description and characteristics mentioned about visual learners have appeared to be true in my life. I always take down notes when the teacher is teaching form the board and mostly when she/ he draws diagrams but, I tend to not convert the notes into mind maps or if I do only use them when I don’t have my notes book. The techniques mentioned above could help me not forget what I have learnt weeks ago and to study effectively. Knowing that I am a visual learner helps me to know exactly…
