Children’s Pastimes Today and Yesterday
Back in the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s when I was a young girl, I remember when our generation knew to be in the house when the street lights came on. Sometimes my parents were waiting in the front room with a belt if we didn’t make it in on time. Those were the days when most children listen to their parents and we all played outside with no worries. I pray for the kids today because they face so many issues that our generations didn’t have to. Our kids today look up to rappers as if they are some type of god. They don’t know that the videos these rappers are in is really not portraying the real person, and the money, cars, and women are all borrowed to make the video look good yet these kids want to be like them when they grow up. When the rappers talk about shooting someone because of some type of beef, these kids actually take it upon them self and shoot who they are beefing with and don’t even think twice about not doing it. Our generation use to take it to the streets with no guns or weapons just your hands, and if you got your butt kicked you knew not to open your mouth again but eventually you were friends again. Also, children are disrespectful to their elders. These kids will curse like a sailor in front of an adult like it’s nothing ,and they will talk on there cell phones about oral sex in a crowded room so everyone can hear them like they want people to know they are sexually active. We wouldn’t dare to talk about sex around grown people and we damn sure was not performing oral sex. We made sure we respected our elders because we looked up to them, and we did not want them to look at us as a troubled kid with no morals so profanity was out the question. On top of everything, education is not a big deal to these kids. They have no goals in life and there are more drop outs as early as their freshmen year. Many of them with no job and not helping their struggling parents. Education back in our days was a priority. There was no questions asked on that topic and if we did not go to college we better make sure we got a job to take of ourselves because there were no hand outs; We had to earn our allowance, and we made sure the entire house was clean before our parents got home. We cared enough to know when our parents were struggling and helped out as much as we could so they wouldn’t get up. Consequently, there is a big difference between today and yesterday ,but we must remain hopeful that today’s generation will get back on track and pick up were we left off before it is to late. I hope in the near future more kids will want to be like their parents and know their self worth. ‘

There is always that one student that has a strong work ethic and when things get exacerbated they keep working and just do not quit. These students are students who are eager to learn who want succeed, but when it comes to the end of their high school career, what happens? There are approximately 65,000 young adults that are undocumented and graduate each year from high school ( “The DREAM Act Immigration Access to Higher Education.”). These students want to achieve something prominent for themselves they have the grades and the qualifications so that they can attend college. The main obstacle standing in their way is citizenship or residency. This complication prohibits them from being able to apply for government financial aid. Tuition is not only higher but triples to being in state, so that they can feel assuaged. There are many speculations of why people migrate to this country, whether it is illegal or not. Hip hop serves as a form of unity and a crutch for some. Kids tend to always be looking for an adult figure in their life. Some have many others have none, but just about all look up to those in media. Rappers are a part of a multi-billion dollar industry their reach stretches from clothing to cars. Rappers tend to be that adult figure in most urban communities. These kids look up to see their favourite music stars are like themselves. Popular rap star Kendrick Lamar grew up in Compton, one of Americas worst hoods. Now he is a huge star and has fame and fortune. The youth in situations like this see him as a form of inspiration. They aspire to be great like their favourite hip hop stars; they want to pull themselves out of the ghetto. This impact on youth is a great positive for the genre, and a great story for it to. For some the music that they can identify with the most is a way for other to connect. Much like people connect through sports or other interests, hip hop serves as the same tool. Friendships form through these social bonds provided by the music of this genre. With the formation of these friendships they often lead to positive results. For example Taylor and Taylor note that “Early hip hop has often been credited with helping to reduce inner-city gang violence by replacing physical violence with dance and artwork battles.”(qtd About Hip Hop Youth Subculture, 1) These outlets and groups help in reducing violence and instead promote creativity. Music of any genre is a form on entertainment. Rap is no different; these kids are escaping into the world of music. With these kids staying away from gangs and violence they are more likely to grow up to be functioning members of society. While the rap stars are not the sole reason for this they are definitely a part of the solution as opposed to the problem. This is due to the fact that they really do not want to learn. They do not understand the importance of education in our society. Singleton attempts to support his view by claiming that failing grades will make parents support their children in forcing them at home to forward their studies. “Sending students home with final grades of F would force most parents to deal with the realities of their children 's failure while it is happening and when it is yet possible to do something about it (less time on TV, and more time on homework, perhaps!).” (Singleton, 2010) Many of these children have uneducated parents. Many of these children’s parents really do not care about education, since they haven’t been with such education. Failing grades would not have the initial effect on many of those children. Instead of forcing the child to get better grades, a failing grade would convince many of these children to just drop out. This will lead to many more drop-outs. The only way to truly save these kids from this fate is to keep them in school. A more reasonable way to do this is to have teachers support these kids more, as well as having the parents interact more with the teachers. If teachers talk more to the parents then the teachers might be able to get through to those parents the importance of an education to their son or daughters…

Today’s generation is less moral than our parents and grandparents because of some of the role models that they have in their lives. For example, some kids on the bus that are rude to the elderly and sit when in fact there are elderly who are in more need of a seat to sit in rather than teenagers. There are many kids who are so rude and arrogant when you ask them just a simple question. They don’t know the difference between right and wrong. Some smoke and drink in their teenage years and don’t even know how harmful it can be to their bodies later on. It can damage your lungs and your brains all because you made stupid choices and decisions. Teenagers don’t get that or maybe they weren’t taught that.
