Perseus Look up to the starry night sky and you may see the constellation Perseus. Perseus is one of the greatest Greek demigods and his story is equally great. The Greek hero is acclaimed for killing the gorgon monster, Medusa. From humble beginnings to ruling the land of Tirynth, Perseus is truly a Grecian hero. The handsome and brave Perseus is often painted holding Medusa’s severed head and winged sandals that the Greek god Hermes gave him to help defeat Medusa. Some artists often include the sword Perseus used to decapitate Medusa with. He is a righteous man gifted with courage. Unlike the majority of Grecian mythological creatures, heroes, and gods, Perseus does not have a downfall in his virtue. He is one of the very few Grecian heroes who did not have a vice that lead him to demise. Perseus’ tale begins with his mother, Danae. Danae and Perseus lived on the island Seriphos. The King Polydectes of Seriphos wanted to marry Danae but he knew that Perseus stood in his way. To cast Perseus away and indirectly lead him to his death he sent him on a mission to retrieve the gorgon monster Medusa’s head. With snakes for hair, Medusa could turn anyone that looked at her turn into stone. Perseus accepted King Polydectes challenge and started on his journey. He acquired the help of other Greek gods and goddesses and other mythological creatures to defeat Medusa. Along with the intercession of the gods and goddesses and
Perseus defeated Medusa the gorgon, saved his love from a sea monster, ruled the land of Tirynth and founded the city Mycenae. He encountered many difficult trials but he valiantly reigned victorious in all. Perseus proves that even the most formidable of challenges can be conquered.
