Persepolis Refl Statement
Reflective statement
The interactive oral we have had has been very enlightening in terms of different opinions. It gave me the opportunity to see how other people interpreted the book as well as how each one of us understood and thought of it.
In fact, before having had the interactive oral with all my class, I thought of Persepolis as a Bildungsroman, however, as each student said their different opinions, mine changed as well. For example now I believe that Persepolis is not only a Bildungsroman but also a graphical memoire that gives an inside look on Iran, it is a mixture of both.
Also, throughout this interactive oral, I learnt that the whole book’s main goal is to send a message, Marjane’s transition from childhood to becoming a teenager. During the oral we proved this with many different parts of the first book of Persepolis, which was very interesting. For example, we noticed the way Marjane begins to lie to her parents as well as to the outside world. Or how she commonly as every teenager, tries to smoke a cigarette for the first time to rebel against her parents.
However I think that the main thing we learnt during this interactive oral was that we all realized that it wasn’t a common teenage rebellion, in fact, every time Marjane rebelled against her parents as for example when she went against their prohibition to demonstrate, not only she rebelled against her parents’ authority but also and mainly to the new Iranian regime. Which, at that time was very dangerous for a female teenager in that kind of repressive regime.
Finally another main thing that we emphasized during the interactive oral was how much of an impact Marjane’s family had on her beliefs and opinions. In fact, throughout all the book, she is extremely influenced by her family’s ideas although she has such a strong and repressive background and culture.
