Approximately 1,000,000 Americans are victims of father-daughter incest. (The National Center for Victims of Crime, 2011). In the poem Persephone II by Carrza DuBose, a young girl is a victim of sexual abuse by her father. Throughout the poem, she constantly expresses that the man was her father and her lack of comfort with the situation at hand. Persephone never identifies her father; she merely refers to him as “him”. The use personification, similes and metaphors conveys what is going on without actually saying that she was a victim of rape and incest. Persephone II is broken into four stanzas with two lines in each, couplet. There is not a rhyme scheme in this poem. There is punctuation at the end of each line, except for line five where there is a semicolon. DuBose effectively expresses the theme of the father-daughter relationship through abduction, incest and abduction.…

America suffered a huge alcohol problem in the 1920s. The use of alcohol swept the nation but eventually got out of hand. Most Americans were unable to drink responsibly which lead to the start of prohibition. On December 17, 1917 the 18th amendment was passed putting on the sell and manufacturing of alcohol. This had America outraged. In turn people did whatever they had to, to get their alcohol again. The crime rate all over America rose dramatically. Prohibition was horrible on the American economy. Lastly, because of the great corruption in government there was a difficulty. Prohibition was passed for so many reasons, but these being the three main reasons America changed its mind about it.…

Conformity is behavior change designed to match the actions of others. During my research, I found many examples of conformitive behavior. I often related conformity to adolescents due to the fact that they usually do their best to try and fit in when it comes to group settings. This type of behavior can be seen in college students attending educational facilities away from home. Those that are in dorms tend to indulge in drinking even if they aren’t “big drinkers”. They do this to conform to that of others and to be included in the fun and try and fit in. One last example that I will discuss prior to getting into my own observation, was the study that was done my Crandall in 1988 which examined normative social influences involving bulimia in college sororities. Sororities are the true definition of conformity and those that don’t conform are usually not allowed to continue to pledge. In the particular sororities that were examined, Crandall found that it had its own norm when it came to the “right” amount of food to eat and the popularity within the sorority was associated with adhering to this norm. Those that wanted to be a part of the sororities needed to conform to the “norm” and fell into a bulimic state. These girls had to of known this was not healthy for them yet they wanted to continue to become of part of this group and follow the “norm” that was set out. To me, this is just ridiculous.…

Throughout my short time here at Walden, I have taken so much from each of my courses in my journey as a Master’s candidate in Science Education. I have learned so much about reforming and editing my teaching philosophy and practice in my quest to become a more effective administrator. I cherish this last assignment, because in my mind it is such a celebratory time, that recognizes the effort and the work that went into the past seven weeks – and also really reflecting on what has transpired in my thought processes.…

On September 7th, 2014, 2:00PM, I have visited the church of Unity. This church is shared by two different groups with different culture and ethnicity and by that I mean there are scheduled times for using the church. The building is said to be more then 10 years old, but the architecture looks untouched, it is built out of bricks, there is parking lot, front and back, so one can assume it is a pretty big church with lot of the parking available. When you first enter the building, you can view the wide open area and seats that can be used. Also the first thing you will see from first entering the building will be the podium in the furthest back. That podium is placed on the center and on the left, there is a piano, and to the right of the podium is the drum and synthesizer.…

We all have things we do to help us relax at the end of the day. Some people have an alcoholic drink, while others smoke a cigar or a cigarette, or relax and watch television. Now people these days go to a place called Coffee Rush every day after work to get away from their hectic life. When arriving at Coffee Rush, the aroma of freshly ground up coffee beans is in the air along with the bustle of everyone in the shop, and the baristas making the drinks. Everyone in the shop is in a good relaxing mood drinking coffee. As you sit down on the cold metal chairs, you are in a different world, a world away from reality with no cliques or stress and acceptance between all.…

    Individuation

What is deindividuation? Deindividuation occurs when an individual loses his or her normal identity and inhibitions to engage in behaviors that individual would not normally perform. This happens when a group of people demonstrate social loafing (individuals putting in less effort because they are part of a group, and each individual is trying to accomplish a common goal). These groups then diffuse responsibility and lower evaluation apprehension in an individual at the same time as they arouse that individual. In 1969 and 2007, Philip Zimbardo stated that there are 3 contributing factors to deindividuation. These three factors are arousal, anonymity, and diffused responsibility. Zimbardo believed that the occurrence of these three factors lowers an individual’s inhibitions and will be more likely to incline that individual to engage in antisocial behavior. In 1981, Steven Prentice-Dunn and Ronal Rogers believed that people think they can go as far as they go without punishment because of accountability cues (conditions in a situation that cause less identity in an individual). These accountability cues cause an individual to be more vulnerable to deviant behavior because of that individual’s cost-reward calculations (identifies that cost of the interaction and the reward of the interaction to determine the behavior in the situation). These investigators believed that deindividuation only occurs in groups, later research would suggest that it could occur outside the group. In 1980, Ed Diener believed that an individual’s lack of self-awareness is the major reason why deindividuation occurs. Diener thought a lack of self-awareness leads to people not think of themselvess individuals because they cannot view their own inner values and behaviors. Diener would later discover in his research study - young trick-or-treaters stealing candy on Halloween - that reduced self-awareness is a component of deindivduation. In 1998, Tom Postmes and Russell Spears…
