Baumrind (1967) suggests that the majority of parents display one of three different parenting styles. Authoritarian is the first style of parenting considered by Baumrind. This is where the parent uses strict discipline and leaves no opportunity for the child to negotiate. An example of a phrase used by an authoritarian parent may be “No you can not”, however, this may lead to the child rebelling at some point, therefore making it hard to impose rules. Permissive, The second parenting style, relies on imposing few rules or boundaries, the impact of which may be both negative and positive. The positive impact of this approach is that it may lead to better social skills. Alternatively the negative impact may be that the child could lack personal responsibility. To paraphrase, an example a parent may use with this parenting style may be “Well if you do not feel like it”, however, Baumrind contests that if a child’s behavior needs to be altered it may be difficult to do so with this parenting style. In the article “A conceptual model for the development of externalizing behavior problems among kindergarten children of alcoholic families: Role of parenting and children 's self-regulation”, Eiden, Edwards and Leonard (2007) conducted a study on the effects having an alcoholic parent on a child’s behavioral development. They examined the behavior of children from the age of 12 months through development into kindergarden resulting from an alcoholic parents influence. Eiden, Edwards and Leonard (2007) compared behavior between children who came from an alcoholic family background, to those who were not exposed to alcoholic situations. The main research question posed by the team was a hypothesis that alcoholic family situations cause children to exhibit problematic behaviors such as issues with Effortful Control3 as well as depression. Eiden, Edwards and Leonard (2007) had children participate in a study where the child was told not to play with a certain toy before their parent was removed from then room. Once the parent was removed, an unfamiliar face entered and played with the toy, and then left the child alone in the room for 8 minutes.…

Permissive parents tend to compromise the rules and expectations set to avoid confrontation, and they are more of a friend than a parent more times then not. Parental figures that adopt a permissive or neglectful approach, could potentially allow their children to partake in activities that will ultimately seek out approval (Story, 2011). As a child goes through their developmental years, they will strive to seek approval from their parental figures by excelling in academics, performing well in sport activities, and by showing well-mannered behaviors. Adolescents, who do not receive warmth and acceptance from their parental figures, could potentially use those appropriate societal activities to gain wanting acceptance from other individuals in authority, such as their teacher or coach, without turning to substance use. Parental alcoholism is a form of child mistreatment, many children who grow up in home with an alcoholic parent or parents become alcoholics later in later.
