Periodic Trends Lab Report
Our task was to look over 6 properties of the elements and determine if they follow a periodic trend or if they do not. A periodic trend increases or decreases across both a period and down a group. A quasi-periodic trend does not follow a periodic trend. The quasi-periodic trend is a trend that increases or decreases down a group. Our guiding question was Which properties of the elements follow a periodic trend? To discover the trends for each property of the elements, my group and I graphed each property, looked over the Excel file that includes a list of the known elements and information of the properties, as well as a periodic table and made annotations (Table 1). How we graphed is by using the properties number as a dependent variable with the atomic number as the independent variable. In order to find the trend for the property of elements, we graphed it then we …show more content…
Table 1. Data and Analysis of Trends
Property Data Analysis
Atomic Mass When you move down the row of the periodic table the atomic mass increases and if you go across the column it increases as well.
Density When you go down the row of the periodic table the density increases.
Boiling point When you go the rows of the periodic table the boiling point decreases.
Melting point When you go down the rows of the periodic table the melting point goes higher.
Specific Heat Capacity When you move across the column of the periodic table the specific heat capacity decreases. It also decreases when you go to down the row.
Electronegativity
When you go down the row of the periodic table the electronegativity decrease. When you go across the periodic table the electronegativity increase.
My claim is that the properties of the elements that follow a periodic trend are the atomic mass, specific heat capacity, and electronegativity. The other 4 that do not follow the periodic trends follow the quasi-periodic trend which is the

Here are some questions about the elements, their properties, and periodicity. In each case, the correct answer is the name of an element (one of the two given). Write the answer in the appropriate space at the right, placing the first letter in the first blank. There are more than enough blanks to fit either element name, so the number of letters in the name cannot be used as a clue. When the puzzle is complete, the Periodic Law will be displayed in the highlighted column.( by Bronwyn J. Nelson, Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Ohio.)…
