Fiction Semester Project
3 October 2011 A book tells a story and gives you a visual in your head. Perfect chemistry is a story of a boy in a gang and a girl with a perfect reputation. Their attraction to each other comes as a surprise as though a slap to the face. This was something neither on them wanted but when they explored the attraction since they couldn’t keep away from each other, they fell in love. The genre of this story is young adult since the story contains problems from the normal teen’s life. The story is told from the girl’s and boy’s point of view and changing in each chapter, going from the boy to the girl. The style used in this book is very simple, though some vocabulary words may be difficult to conceive. The story is especially two teens and how life may seem different one the outside for them but really their lives were quite similar. Some problems for them may not have been the normal teens but mostly a teen can relate to most of their problems. The genre is young adult because of the characters being about the high school age and having a story similar with a lot of teen living in the cities, where violence and gangs are normal way of life. In most books, the story is told from only one character’s view but in this one it was told from both the male and female character’s view. This helped in explaining how each event in the story had an effect on them and how they reacted to it. The reader is told the story where most details are known only to the reader but no other characters. The author has used some figurative language, has followed the normal sentence structure for the most part. The vocabulary in the books was difficult at times; some words wouldn’t have been comprehensible unless a dictionary was near. This story has different layers to it and may seem difficult to grasp at first but as soon as the reader gets past a chapter or two, it grabs the reader’s attention, quickly. The story is about two

The title of the book that I read is Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. It is a fiction book about two people who come from opposite sides of town. One of the main characters is named Brittany, she is from the rich part of town and she seems perfect but she hides what her family is really like. The other main character is a boy named Alex, he lives in a rough part of town with his family and he is part of a gang called Latino Bloods.…

To start, many novels have different ways to appeal the reader. For example, novels use settings, moods, tones, and many other literary parts that a narrative needs. In Ethan Frome, the setting is taken place in Starkfield, Massachusetts, around the late nineteenth-early twentieth century. This novel also has a different variety of tones to keep the reader from falling asleep such as foreboding, bleak, ironic, tragic, and spare. This novels point of view is a frame story that is told in the first person, from the narrators limited point of view as a visitor unfamiliar with Starkfield and Ethan Frome. However, most of the book is written in the third person limited, in which the narrator accesses Ethans thoughts but not those of the other characters. The genre of this novel which is a tragic romance does make a difference to whoever is reading the book, for not everyone has the same taste in literature. The themes and motifs are also a very important part of appeal to a novel for they give…

The elements Dayna Lorentz, used in her book, No Safety In Numbers, were point of view, setting, and dramatic irony. The first, point of view, is told from the 3rd person multiple. This is odd, and not commonly used, however in this story it makes since to tell the story of multiple teens viewpoint, as each finds out more and more and adapts to this changing environment. As shown in this quote from page 149, “The girl was white as death. All Lexi had wanted was to get out of the store. She owed ginger something.” However Lexi was just one of the characters Lorentz chose to go deeper into. This achieved a suspenseful mood and made you feel like you were inside with each of them. Lorentz was smart to do this, it was one of the best ways to achieve emotional attachment. Overall this lead the reader to be engaged, like it was actually happening. It was a refreshing change of pace from books that do not let you fully engage, but force you to look in through a peephole.…

Romiette and Julio is by Sharon M. Draper. Romiette Cappelle is a sixteen year old African American teenager living in Cincinnati, Ohio. Romi searches for the reason behind her recurring nightmares of fear which involve fire and water. Sixteen year old Julio Montague is a Mexican teenager who has just moved to Cincinnati. Julio wishes he could move back home to his grandfather's. Julio knows it’s impossible since his parents moved to Cincinnati due to the heavy gang presence in Texas. Julio initially meets Romi online in a teen chat room and they discover that they attend the same school. As they begin to create connection, other people begin to object to their relationship. Then there are the Devildogs, an African American gang who wear all purple and make it obvious to Romi and Julio that they don't like the races mixing. As Romi and Julio continue their romance, completely ignoring the Devildogs’ view point, gang members threaten to get even. The danger escalates when the gang begins stalking the couple and decides to forewarn the couple that their romance isn’t appreciated by intimidating them with guns. Julio and Romi are terrified by the threats of violence, and create a plan where they will record these over threats of violence. When the plan goes wrong, Romi and Julio find themselves caught up in a deadly situation, where they end up in a hospital. A theme that can be well explained in this story is that “bravery is not always the key to success.” Once Destiny, Ben, Romiette and Julio forge a plan to escape the awful actions of the Devildogs, their plan entirely does not succeed. They then end up in a situation where they are caught up in tragedy. Quotes that can support my theme by showing Romi and Julio’s courageousness are “Why doesn’t Romi’s dad and his secret six investigative news team follow the Devildogs with a hidden camera, catch them threatening Romi and Julio, then expose it on TV? My dad would…

In this essay “How to Read Like a Writer” Mike Bunn, claims that college students should distinguish choices the writer made and decide whether they want to implement them in their writing; enhancing their level of writing. Bunn explains that reading like a writer is a strategy that questions, analyses and criticizes a text to make readers look at the structure, the style, the word choice in regards to several factors like: the purpose, the audience, and the genre. The author concludes that this strategy will also signal the writer’s argument. The essay ends by providing a step-by-step example to obtain structural analysis and familiarize students with this strategy.…

The beauty of literature is its ability to teach the reader valuable lessons about the world. These lessons are relevant to life, because the themes in many books are based on reality. Although narratives are fictitious, they have been shaped using views from real life, allowing the composer to communicate important and relevant messages. Readers will respond to stories in many different ways, but through an engaging text, they will learn valuable lessons to put into practice in reality. Well-written narratives challenge their readers to reconsider society's views and their own perspectives on particular issues. The audience is positioned to understand how much a personal opinion can be based on society's views. The novel "The Story of Tom Brennan" uses the profound story of the Brennan family to encourage her teenage audience to think critically about the consequences of drink driving and rash decisions. It also offers an insight into the grieving process, demonstrating ways of dealing with adversity and emphasising that accepting support is the best way to recover from grief. Because the novel is written in such an authentic way, the audience is positioned to understand the ideas portrayed in it and how they relate to their own lives.…

In the eighth grade, my entire home room class was required to read The Outsiders. A novel about the events in the life of a 14-year-old boy named Ponyboy and the struggles he faced in his neighborhood. The entire book was to be read during our winter break in order to prepare us for a quiz we would receive the day we returned from break. During that time, I was never interested in reading and could never get through a book without losing interest. The odds of me ever completing an assigned book were immensely low. A book has never caught my attention the way The Outsiders did. It was the first time I had ever connected with the characters in a book. I felt as though I was in the book and was able to depict every detail that occurred in the…

My wife would have to take care of the children when I’m not around. I don’t have children right now, but I’m planning on having two kids. That’s why I would want that characteristic on my wife. Being faithful to your partner is a major role on a relationship especially if you’re planning on marring him or her. Not cheating on your wife or husband is going to bring trust to one another. Another characteristic I want my wife to have is a good sense of humor. Someone I could share jokes with and will laugh along with me instead of at me. People say laughter is the best thing in life and I agree. A relationship without laughter would be boring and pointless. Now the most important characteristic I want on my wife would be for her to be well educated and attractive. I want a wife I could hold a good conversation about the most random thing and for it to be interesting or at least for her to be smarter than me. Being attractive is very important to me because I have noticed that attractive people seem to be more successful in life, they’re the ones that get promotions or invitations to the bosses house for dinner. Those are some of the characteristics I would want on my wife.…
