Percy Jackson Chapter Summary
Imagine being a young boy from upstate New York, who has lived a difficult life, losing his father when he was little, and moving from school to school due to his horrific behavior in school. Now imagine that same boy, except now he’s a hero, worshipped by the gods, and in a situation where he could either save or destroy all humanity. The trouble prone life of teenager Percy Jackson becomes a lot more complicated when he learns he is the son of the Sea God, Poseidon. After being discovered by the deadliest monsters one could think of, he is forced to go into hiding at a summer camp called Half Blood Hill. This is not just any summer camp, however, it is a training ground for the children of deities. Percy learns to harness his powers as he …show more content…
However, two questions peaked my interest more than others. The first question I have is, why do you think Percy and his friends overlooked the fact that Auntie Em was more than likely a monster? I believe Percy and his friends overlooked the fact that Auntie Em might have been a monster for several reasons. The first reason being because the group of demi-gods had lost all their money along their quest. In the bus explosion that had recently occurred, all of their belongings had been burnt down along with the flames. Furthermore, Aunty Em also offered them the item they needed the most, free food. Not only did the food taste good, but also its smell was irresistible. Percy even said, “The aroma was like laughing gas in the dentist’s chair—it made everything else go away”(Riordan 173). Additionally, I assume that both Grover and Annabeth caught on right away, but Percy was too engulfed in the food to notice anything was wrong. So when his friends started asking questions, he just denied them. I also believe a reason they overlooked the possibility was because they simply just didn’t want to believe it. They had been fighting monsters their entire quest, and when they finally thought they caught a big break, they didn’t want to ruin it. Consequently, they ended up almost dying because of their carelessness. Another question that came to mind was, what is the author’s reasoning when he has Percy having dreams throughout the entire story? I believe the author was trying to create more tension and put more questions into the reader’s mind by doing this. When Percy dreamed of Tartarus and the voice he believed to be Kronos, I believe the author was trying to suggest to the reader that there is more to the story than what meets the eye. Furthermore, Percy also had another dream about a friend who would betray him on his quest, and would create a conflict with him. The author’s purpose for showing

Percy is not just like Perseus because their names sound alike. They are alike in other ways as well. Like Perseus, Percy was saved because he had a god watching over him. In “ The Great Heroes Before the Trojan War” it says, “ But Perseus was saved from his folly. Two great gods were watching over him.”(Hamilton 145). This same thing happened to Percy when he was battling Anabeth. She had beaten him up pretty badly and Percy had lay there…

We are introduced to Perseus “Percy” Jackson, a seemingly boring kid, with dyslexia and troubles making friends. An argument could be made that the first call was in the museum when he was attacked by the Fury, telling him to confess. Not a literal call, but rather a sign by fate that something is happening, the first touch of Percy with the world of the gods. The literal call to adventure of the story is at a rather late part, Percy was already part of Camp Half-blood, and his father, Poseidon, had already claimed him. I mean, the title of the chapter is literally “I Am Offered a Quest”. Not really much to explain there.…

In ancient Greek myth, Perseus and his mother Danae were exiled after Danae’s father, King Akrisios, found out that Danae had been impregnated by Zeus. After finding refuge in Seriphos with Diktys, a fisherman, Danae was pursued by King Polydektes, ruler of Seriphos. In love with Danae, Polydektes “schemed to get rid of the now grown-up Perseus.” The Riordan equivalent to King Polydektes would be Gabe Ugliano, Percy’s stepfather who is constantly playing poker, whom Percy nicknamed “Smelly Gabe” and describes as “nice the first thirty seconds we knew him, then showed his true colors as a world-class jerk.” While Gabe may not be in pursuit of Sally Jackson, Percy’s mother, in the same way that Polydektes was, Gabe still attempts to push Percy out of the household in other ways, like sending Percy away to boarding school and turning Percy’s bedroom into a storage place for his own possessions. Furthermore, in the ancient myth of Perseus, after returning to Seriphos from his quest, he discovers that his mother Danae had taken refuge from Polydektes’ violence. Angered by this, Perseus uses the decapitated Medusa head to petrify Polydektes. After returning home to New York City after his own quest, Percy realizes that Gabe had been physically abusing Percy’s mom Sally. After the instance that Percy…

Instead of simply being gifted with magic, Percy is the son of a Greek God. His friends aren’t mere mortals with spell books. They are Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, and Grover, a satyr. The section of school that hates him isn’t the old home of the series’ big evil, but the most competitive section of students, the children of the God of War, Ares. And instead of Quidditch, Percy finds himself participating in a chariot race. The world of The Lightning Thief brings Greek mythology into the modern world. Who knew that Mount Olympus was located on floor 1000 of the Empire State Building? Or that the Greek gods are responsible for the spread of Western civilization? Unbeknownst to us, we walk among monsters who scour the Earth hoping to find the children of Gods before the Gods do in order to eliminate their competition.…

In “The Loss of the Creature,” Percy focuses on how one perceives something before actually witnessing it based on the opinions of others. The value of the place or idea is already preconceived due to the fact that we are so caught up in time that we overlook the entire experience as a whole. Or being that we are so focused on the option on an object from someone else, we miss the whole concept or what it’s true meaning or “beauty” as Percy state’s is. We lose the ability to make our own decisions because we base them off of someone else’s viewpoints. Using an example of a movie that I experienced shows Percy’s point.…
