There were many characteristics of Percy Jackson that were similar to those of Greek Heroes. Because of this, Percy is most like Perseus, Odysseus, and Theseus.…

References to Greek mythology pervade much of popular Western culture, and although some allusions may go unnoticed for those without a background in mythology. The study of classical mythology is not a standardized, widespread component of education, and thus there is a gap in understanding of these references for many people. One book that sought to popularize Greek mythology amongst young students was Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, which topped the children’s bestsellers lists just under ten years ago. Percy Jackson, a teenager living in New York City, is the protagonist in this novel and embodies the Greek hero Perseus in his relationship with his mother and the quest on which he embarks. While any competent reader can understand the…
Percy Jackson is the main protagonist of the last Olympian. Percy isn’t greed at because he turned down god hood. “Oh, not you although I suppose I should wonder turning down immorality” (Riordan, 355) after defeating Kronos he was given a offer to be a god. He is also funny “With great power... comes great need to take a nap. Wake me up later”. Making funny remark and one liner makes him a funny character in general, this funny one liner was said after he obtained the curse of Achilles and they were outside the underworld. Percy is also caring for his friends and he would do anything to protect them. "You're cute when you get worried; your eyebrows get all scrunched together."(Riordan, 199) this was after Percy’s friend Annabeth was fatally…
In the book “The Lightening Thief” by Rick Riordan, there is a lot of magic. The book is about the all-powerful Greek Gods and half-bloods (half human and half god). Within the book the Greek God Zeus’s magic lightening blot and the Greek God Hades’s helm of darkness get stolen. It is up to Percy Jackson,…
Imagine being a demigod and able to heal from water. That is what Percy Jackson can do in The Sea of Monsters. They obtained their demigod powers from their god or goddess parent. Percy Jackson and his demigod buds are descendents from greek god or goddesses. The Puritans would abhor the novel The Sea of Monsters due to characters disrespecting authority, having superhuman powers, and being self reliant.…
In “The Loss of the Creature,” Percy focuses on how one perceives something before actually witnessing it based on the opinions of others. The value of the place or idea is already preconceived due to the fact that we are so caught up in time that we overlook the entire experience as a whole. Or being that we are so focused on the option on an object from someone else, we miss the whole concept or what it’s true meaning or “beauty” as Percy state’s is. We lose the ability to make our own decisions because we base them off of someone else’s viewpoints. Using an example of a movie that I experienced shows Percy’s point.…

Have you ever read a book and couldn't decide what theme fit it best? I'm reading "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak and I have three possible themes for this book. The possible themes are The power of words, racism, and the basic right to freedom.…
Death uncloaks himself and steps out of the shadows extending his hand to greet the reader as soon as a copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is opened. With these words the narrator of the story, death, describes himself in a manner that one would never have imagined before, making the power of words shine bright on the first page. Throughout The Book Thief, the power, irony, and usefulness of literature is shown in the setting of Nazi Germany during World War II. A young girl by the name of Liesel Meminger becomes a master of her own with words. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing something she can’t resist–-books. With the help of her foster parents and an unlikely stowaway Liesel learns that without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know more. Liesel learns that through knowing the power of words, you can achieve greatness in life. These lessons are learned through a story, a beating, and an autobiography. With words written on a page, Liesel learns her first lesson.…
I found that “The Book Thief” portrayed perfectly one of the greatest casualties of war – the truth. Markus Zusak writes about a young girl – Liesel Meminger – who is initially illiterate, however she realizes the importance and power behind words and stories and she hungers for them. She steals books in an effort to understand and eventually, under the tutelage of Hans Hubermann – her papa – she is able to immerse herself in the new ideas and truths conveyed in these stories. I believe Liesel Meminger being a book thief is very significant in this context. During Nazi Germany, Hitler had terrorized and destroyed people and nations with his words, convincing others of his anti-Semitic and anti-communist perspectives, murdering millions of Jews as a result. Throughout the novel Liesel becomes increasingly aware of the effect the Fuhrer’s words had on the war and finally understands that it was in fact the driving force behind the war. In what I believe was an attempt to try and restore understanding of the truth, as Hitler destroyed with his words, Liesel was stealing them back.…
