Peranakan Community
Peranakan Chinese, also called baba-nyonya or Straits Chinese, is a unique and vibrant culture found in the South-east Asian Region. Peranakans are found mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. It is a culture that encompasses the best of old ancient Malay, Chinese, and European influences and absorbs the best of other cultures as well to form a cohesive and united Peranakan identity.

The Peranakans have lived for generations along the Straits of Melaka . Most of them are English-educated . They are Chinese immigrants that came to Indonesia , Malaysia and Singapore . They mostly have a lineage where intermarriage with local Indonesians and Malays
They have religious affiliations with Hindus ( Indian Peranakans ) , Catholics ( Eurasian) , Taoists ( Chinese Peranakans ). They also have close ties with China as they send their sons to China for education purposes. However , they stopped sending their children to China for education when the Portuguese and the Dutch arrived in Melaka and schools were set up. As so , their sons were able to continue or start education locally . The Peranakans were also more loyal to the British than to China as they are the elites of Singapore . They are also mostly subscribed to Chinese beliefs system such as Taoism , Confucianism , and Chinese Buddhism. However , that was in the past . Most young Peranakans nowadays embrace Christianity. They also stick to celebrating Chinese festivals such as Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival . Since they were also influenced by the Chinese , Portuguese , Dutch , British , and Malay in the Peranakan culture , we can say that the Peranakan had cultural influences with them .

The Peranakans loved lavish and merrymaking, loves meeting relatives and friends for a game of cherki (a popular gambling sport with Nyonyas), singing pantuns, chewing sireh, dancing jojet to the tunes of dondang sayang , listening to the ronggeng band or the Watang Peranakan and the chongkak for the children.
