Penelope As A Hero In Homer's Odyssey

What is a hero? A hero is someone that helps others, that is selfless, kind, and many more things. A perfect example of a hero is Odysseus from the Odyssey. Odysseus has many characteristic that a hero would have. He was very clever. He was always coming up with unique ways to get through obstacle and to get what we wanted. One example of this is when he stabbed the cyclops in the eye while it was sleeping. Odysseus is also very caring. He would always care for his crew even they weren’t always the best crew or the smartest. He is also very strong. When he returned home he had to fight off all of the suitors for his wife so that he could prove to his wife that we was Odysseus and that he had returned from his very long journey. There are more
But, this is not always the case. One very unique and unsung hero in the Odyssey is Penelope. Penelope is the wife to Odysseus. She is a very unique hero because she is not your typical physically strong hero she is much more of a strong minded hero. Penelope is very clever, persistent, faithful, and loyal but at the same time she can also be very manipulative when she needs to be so that she can stay faithful and loyal. Penelope was extremely clever. She always felt that Odysseus would return. She has many many suitors that wanted to marry her. So, she told them that when she was done weaving her tapestry that she would finally marry one of them. But, being as clever as she was she would weave and unweave the tapestry multiple times so that it looked like it was taking her a long time to finish weaving it. Penelope was also very good with words. She knew the perfect way to say things in order to get what she wanted. All of these reasons are perfect examples of why Penelope is a strong minded but unsung hero. Telemachus is another example of an unsung hero. Telemachus is Odysseus son. Telemachus is very loyal, polite, respectful, and charming. Telemachus was born after his father left but still he went on a journey to save his father. This says a lot about him because he wants to go and save Odysseus, his father, even though he has never met him before and doesn’t even know if his father is alive or if he himself will make it back alive.Telemachus is a hero because of his faith and loyalty towards his father.
