At the beginning of my high school days when I was a freshman or “fish” as the upperclassmen would call us, I never knew where I really belonged. Every clique or group that I tried to become a part of did not truly fit my personality. Just like the upperclassmen had said, I felt like a small fish in an even bigger sea. It all changed when one day a pep rally was held in honor of our first football game of the season. As I sat in the rickety bleachers and watched the cocky football players walk out followed by the overly-spirited cheerleaders, I sat back in dismay. But then following the cheerleaders,…

At a young age, I waited on the benches for my mother to retrieve me from carpool. I observed my peers laughing together as they walked towards the gym for after-school sports. My mother, who soon arrived to find her kindergarten son sitting in solitude, scheduled numerous parent-teacher conferences. She would share her concerns while my teachers assured her that my "individuality" was what attracted friends to me. I had been a leader rather than a follower regardless of the opinion of others, and, to this day, that has remained static. I have evolved from that careless kindergarten leader, to an aspiring college graduate.…

Online social support for those suffering from a serious illness, can be a means to replace traditional face-to-face support groups and communities. The purpose of this journal entry is to explain how I would offer advice to a friend who may be suffering from a serious health condition, on the advantages and pitfalls of joining an online support group. As social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are becoming a part of an everyday connection with family and friends, computer-mediated social support can be valuable in helping patients to cope with an illness, and deal with a variety of health disorders in a low-cost way (Parker, 2008). One such website which provides cancer support to 2,500 members in the form of a chatroom is the Macmillan’s Cancer Support website (Health Social Networks: Support groups, 2008).…
