Pediatric Exercise Analysis
The promotion of physical activity and physical fitness are very important factors in promoting a healthy lifestyle in children. It is vital for physical education teachers to understand how growth and development during childhood can affect a child’s fitness level and life. Children are children and cannot be treated as miniature adults; they are growing and need to participate in exercise appropriate to their age. The purpose of the article was to review the concepts of pediatric exercise physiology that are essential to physical education programs for children in grades K-6 (Fisher). Even though there has been some speculation on resistance training in children due to growth plates it has been found to be safe in the pediatric population as long as it is supervised and it is not excessive in loading. Training frequency of no more than 2-3 nonconsecutive days per week is recommended to allow time for children to engage in other forms of physical activity (Fisher). Physical activities should be fun for children otherwise it could have a negative impact and cause children to not want to participate in any type of exercise. As we age, both males and females tend to gain fat weight (Haywood). If fitness is incorporated early in childhood, there is a chance to prevent obesity and the rate of mortality along with certain health issues that can be avoided. Physical activity and fitness are essential in physical education. A focus on involvement in physical activity in every child is linked with health benefits, enhancements in physical fitness which is more prone to lead to the implementation of an active lifestyle (Fisher). The development of essential motor skills in children are critical to the later fulfillment of skills needed for lifetime activities. Every child should participate in some type of exercise and if they enjoy it and have fun it is that much better for the
