My plans after CVCC are to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, then apply to the UNC School of Dentistry DDS Program, and lastly apply to the Graduate Pediatric Dentistry Program at UNC. I have shadowed dentists in private pediatric practices who have provided me with a detailed understanding of a career in pediatric dentistry. It is incredible to see dental assistants, hygienists, and dentists give up their time and comfort. They offer their dental services for free in developing countries to give patients the care that they desperately need. A volunteer dentist who has inspired me to one day be a dental missionary is Dr. Penland. Every year, during the summer, he makes a trip to a foreign country to offer his dental skills free of charge to those who cannot afford it; meanwhile, he shares the beautiful message of the Gospel. Dr. Penland is one of the most benevolent people I know. I hope to one day be a dentist who inspires others just like Dr. Penland inspired

One of the biggest challenges I have faced was moving to America from Pakistan. The transition was difficult; I left childhood memories, family, and close friends behind. However, this portion of my life had a strong influence on the impact I want to have on impoverished populations. Seeing a dentist in Pakistan is a privilege that most of the families couldn’t afford. In those 17 years, it was rare for my family and I to have our teeth professionally cleaned or have a regular dental checkup.
