Peace Corps Volunteer Service
Learning, growing, and sharing—these three verbs, seemingly passive, have become some of the most active values in my life. With a naïve worldview shattered and my heart open to the needs of the world, I, as a seventh grade student, left Heifer International’s Ranch in Arkansas, after participating in an experiential education poverty simulation. I grew into the role of an enlightened global citizen with aspirations of acting on what I had learned about food security, poverty and the environment. Fast forward nearly a decade and I am sharing, living, working and acting on what I had learned with Heifer International in the role of Residential Education Volunteer at Heifer Farm in Rutland, Masachusetts. In my UWMC volunteer application statement, I explained the reasons why I'm passionate in volunteering: because of my experience with hospitals and nurses, I developed strong interests in hospital setting, roles of medical staff, and the magnificent human anatomy. After working as both an escort volunteer and a postpartum unit volunteer for over 100 hours, I am finally confident to say that my intuition led me to the right path. Being able to transport patients between different units gave me opportunities to communicate with them, to help them with their needs; while being able to work with nurses helped me building my understanding of the hospital system and unit setup. These two roles not only offered me an opportunity to have both general…

The topic of my paper will be focusing in on how patients are treated in their non-native countries, the primary focus being on undocumented in the country. The two nations that will be looked at are the United States and Mexico. The reason I have chosen this topic was that I have some experience in this field and if I continue on the path I’d like to, there will be many more experiences surround this topic in my future. My personal experience which I feel that I can bring to the paper is the volunteering I have done at a free clinic. Many of the people who would come to us did not have US papers, and all of the patients we saw did not have medical insurance. In fact, there was a process to become a patient including a forty-five-minute visit.…

Hunger has always been a serious issue and still is today. Many people experience food insecurity and feel shameful when going to food pantries or seeking assistance. We can reduce the negative stigma associated with food pantries in numerous ways. First spreading awareness of the need for food pantries will help change the stigma as people realize that the need is real. Then educating the public on the number of people in need of the food pantries because of their struggle with food insecurity will show how prevalent the need has become. Most of all volunteering in food pantries is a firsthand way to get involved and reduce the negative feeling associated with the need for assistance. These few things will be a great start in reducing the…

Nonetheless, through the challenges, I discovered strengths in myself. I have always been mainly a follower because I am easy to get along with. At times this quality has hurt me, but during my time at the camp I was transformed into a leader. The group of volunteers I was working with were not as motivated or passionate as they could have been. I could not do all the work myself, so I took my stand as a leader and motivated the dietary staff team to do their best work. I used my voice to delegate tasks to efficiently get them done, as well as pushing with perseverance when I was beyond the point of exhaustion.…
