PDHPE Shrek Analysis
Movie Analysis – Relationships (Shrek)
1. Intro Paragraph - Give a synopsis of the Movie and its Characters
When a green ogre called Shrek discovers his swamp is now full of all sorts of fairytale creatures by the (very short) Lord Farquaad, Shrek sets out with a very loud talkative donkey by his side, to 'persuade' Farquaad to give his swamp back.
Instead, a deal is struck. Farquaad, who wants to become the King, sends Shrek to rescue Princess Fiona, who is waiting for her one true love (to release her with a kiss from a curse that turns her into an ogre at night).
But once they head back with Fiona, it starts to become apparent that not only does Shrek love Fiona, but Fiona loves Shrek as well.
They split up and Fiona goes to marry Lord Farquaad. Both Fiona and Shrek regret this decision almost immediately, Donkey however convinces Shrek to stop the marriage and tell Fiona that he loves her.
With the help of the dragon that used to guard Fiona, they manage to arrive just in time and Shrek confesses his feelings towards Fiona, Fiona transforms into an ogre when the Sun sets, and Lord Farquaad orders the death of them both. However Shrek calls the dragon, who swallows Farquaad and spits out his crown. The movie ends with Fiona and Shrek getting married and living “ugly ever after.”
2. Highlight one or two relationship(s) between the characters, using positive and negative examples
A relationship in the movie that was extremely disturbing was the relationship between Farquaad and the fairytale citizens of his kingdom.
At the start of the movie, Farquaad's soldiers acting under orders from him were seizing all fairytale creatures and paying anyone handing them in, a set price. These creatures would then be sent on, manacled and shackled like animals to a “designated resettlement facility.” This seems to be a dictator attempting genocide, starting with convincing the public to betray their fairytale counterparts and the forced movement of said fairytale citizens

The first major piece of propaganda to be implemented is the commandments written by the pigs, which are eventually all broken. The ideas of Old Major are simplified once again with a motto the pigs create which moves the animals away from the desired results of the revolution. Napoleon then drives Snowball off of the farm and turns him into a scapegoat. After this event takes place Napoleon is able to establish himself as a heroic leader. The motto the sheep’s chant is used to drown out any chance of protest. The donkey Benjamin notices afterwards one of the commandments on the wall has been changed. Life on the farm continues in the same terrible way with no sign of hope for the animals. The strong presence of deliberate tactics to assist a leader…

Is Shrek a conventional fairytale? Analyse how the makers of Shrek use the conventions of a fairytale and comment on the ways the film both typifies and subverts the genreWhat are fairytales? Fairytales are stories with a moral which have been passed down from generation to generation mainly orally. When we consider fairytales we think of; Prince charming, damsel in distress, evil witch and a happy ending. These so called “fairytales” started off as very gruesome and brutal stories about how children were kidnapped and killed. Then when Disney started to produce these fairytales as narrative on film, they took the step of editing the more menacing parts and replacing them with scenes that young children could understand.…

The structure of a play shows the overall organization of a story and is very important to help with the understanding of the play itself. The structure is the overall foundation of a story and helps lead the reader towards very important portions of the play. A reader is allowed to maintain a fluid and easy understanding of the play as the story moves on towards the conclusion. Without having a solid foundation the story will not be able to continue and flow correctly. A great example of structure is in “Trifles” by Susan Glaspelli, in which we begin the story by being introduced to the main characters to help unfold a mystery.…

Like Peter Pan this film has fairies and magical kingdoms but the difference is, even with my pre-existing dislike del Toro managed to capture my attention and use this genre to make a movie that developed its characters controllably. The reason I enjoyed the magical realism in the movie was because it was done so well, normally when I watch a film with magic elements I have to question the need for magic but, del Toro used the genre without needing any explanation to why it was necessary. The use of a magic kingdom for example was needed because without it del Toro would not have been able to show the full gruesome side of the Fascist Regime stopping at nothing to get what they want but, not necessarily coming out best…

In the tale of the Pied Piper, we have a village overrun with rats. A man arrives dressed in clothes of pied (a patchwork of colors) and offers to rid the town of the vermin. The villagers agree to pay a vast sum of money if the piper can do it – and he does. He plays music on his pipe which draws all the rats out of the town. When he returns for payment – the villagers won’t cough up so the Pied Piper decides to rid the town of children too! In most modern variants, the piper draws the children to a cave out of the town and when the townsfolk finally agree to pay up, he sends them back. In the darker original, the piper leads the children to a river where they all drown (except a lame boy who couldn’t keep up). Some modern scholars say that there are connotations of pedophilia in this fairy tale.…

Prior to reading “The Princess and the Goblin”, I assumed it was just another fairytale about a princess who falls in love with a cursed being and help transform that being into his original well-being. Even from the beginning of the book, I thought ‘this book is going to be so boring and predictable’. Little did I know, the more I read the more thought provoking the book became. Only after completing the book did I realize the author’s real intentions and how some of the underlying specific messages relate to religious symbolism.…
