The architect for the World Building was George B. Post. The construction for this building began on October 10th, 1889, and the building was finished and opened for operation almost one year later on December 10th, 1890. This was an amazing feat considering the specifics of this building. This was the first building in New York to surpass 284 feet. The New York World Building was the tallest skyscraper built for major newspapers and magazines in the late 19th century. The World building was 18 stories high and 309 feet tall. Unfortunately the World Building was destroyed in 1955 for an expanded automobile entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. The New York World building set the pace for many of the future skyscrapers that were built in New York City. Like some other New York City skyscrapers The New York World building is gone, but it is not forgotten. This is a term that this current generation can grasp when it comes to New York City skyscrapers.…

‘Burj Khalifa’, formerly known as ‘Burj Dubai’ is currently the world’s tallest building. It is a unique & spectacular skyscraper, and an engineering marvel to set ones sight on – if one could get a complete glance without having to strain their neck. Almost a kilometer from tip-to-toe, the exquisite structure stands about 2,717 feet or 830 meters tall with total-floors amounting over 160 (Golden, 2010). Located in the heart of the fresh-metropolitan city, Dubai, the Burj Khalifa was just one part of the vast project called ‘Burj Downtown’ or ‘Downtown Dubai’, which included the world’s largest shopping mall ‘The Dubai Mall’ and various other construction projects (villas, offices, entertainment/recreational facilities, restaurants, etc.). The goal of erecting Burj Khalifa was not only to be the highest skyscraper but was designed & constructed to be a milestone of ingenuity, inspiration and accomplishment. The construction was planned by the Dubai government with the purpose of becoming a hub for finance, trade & tourism in the Middle-East ("Burj khalifa" 2009). The idea of the mega-structure itself feels or sounds almost over-whelming, but there was and is a strong will, vision, goal and mission set by the political & economic leaders of the United Arab Emirates to accomplish the task of creating, managing & handling the world’s tallest building. As it was announced near the end of year-2003 that the world’s highest man-made structure was being planned to be constructed soon, much was expected to follow-through in the coming time. Undoubtedly, it was a massive project with over 60 contractors & consultants (both international & local) and thousands of people (stakeholders) and a budget of about U.S.D. 875 million ("Burj khalifa fact sheet" 2010). According the developers (Emaar PJSC), approximately 22 million man-hours were expected (2004-2008) to the finalization of the masterpiece. After some planning, the construction process began in January…

PBDE’s are chemicals used extensively in several consumer products around the world. They are mainly flame-retardants and are found in consumer goods such as electrical equipment, construction materials, coatings, textiles and polyurethane foam (furniture padding) http://clinmedres.org/content/1/4/281.short. Similar in structure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PBDEs resist degradation in the environment. PBDEs were typically produced commercially at three different levels of bromination; nominally penta-, octa- and deca-BDE. The deca-PBDE formulation made up 83.3% of the 2001 PBDE global market demand, followed by penta- 11.1%, and octa- 5.6 %( LaA Guardia et al 2006). While PBDE’s are shown to be harmful in that they are bioaccumulative, they are integral part of our everyday lives and currently have no alternatives which are less harmful, as shown in a study by Wu et al in 2011. They showed that non- PBDE brominated fire retardants, such as BTBPE and HBB had comparable or even greater BAF (bioaccumulative factor) than PBDE congeners suggesting that these agents have potentially high environmental risks as well.…

Of the two building, the one named Tower 1 was built by Hazama Corporation, while the other, known as Tower 2, was constructed by Samsung Engineering & Construction. The construction work on Petronas Towers was completed in 1998 and they were opened in August 1999. At the time of their completion, the twin buildings were the tallest buildings in the world and continued to be so till 2004. The interior design of the towers depicts the influence of Malaysian culture. An interesting fact is that the effort that went into the building of these towers, turned out to be global. The architect was an Argentinian; the consultants were from Canada, the structural design engineers were from New York and lastly two consortiums were hired one from Japan and the other from South Korea.…

    2. While the Sears Tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it's unlikely that architects and engineer have abandoned the quest for the world's tallest building. The question is: just how high can a building go? Structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500 story building. From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial (May 1990): 15.…
