Meaningful Learning Paulo Freire’s essay ‘The Banking Concept of Education’ and Walker Percy’s essay ‘The Loss of the Creature’ ultimately share the same message that students without a struggle are not able to use their education to confront real-life situations. I believe that meaningful learning is a process that takes place daily. Everyone learns in a different way and at different speed. I feel that it is a gradual process in which one learns imperceptibly depending on what they have been able to grasp in or from the kind of mistakes made. I would define meaningful learning as a process in which one is exposed to new interesting information, knowledge or experience that one

For me, it is meaningful learning if one has used their individual perspective and critical thinking to come to a conclusion and educated them from the information acquired. I feel that having predetermined notions is not a terrible thing but it is important that one should be open to other aspects. To shed some light on my concept of meaningful learning, I would like to use the example of my visit to Red Fort, India. I went with some preconceived notions since I had heard a lot about it from my close friend. Percy states in his essay that, “the sovereign discovery of the thing before him is rather measuring up of the thing to the criterion of the preformed symbolic complex” (460). Percy, in the above statement argues that having a preconceived image through media, books or other sources can lead to false appreciation. While on the other hand, Freire’s states that education becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits, which the students patiently receive, memorize and repeat (318).     According to Paulo Freire, "Education is suffering from narration sickness." Students are given information, and they are expected to memorize the information, this is known as the banking concept. If the students only memorize the information, are they even learning what the information truly means or are they just memorizing the information long enough to take a test? The "Banking" Concept of Education is not only ineffective but also contributes to students suffering with the inability to think for themselves and creatively. In his essay, The "Banking" Concept of Education, Paulo Freire basically states that education is simply just a teacher who lectures all class period, filling the student's memory with information, and he or she merely accepts that the information is correct. Students are not to challenge the teacher; hypothetically, they are to follow the teacher blindly. Freire informs us of two completely different concepts of education. Throughout the essay, Freire questions the "banking" concept, but still provide equal and fair support for the concept. However, in the essay, he nearly proposes that the concept of "problem-posing" is the solution to satisfy both teacher and student. Freire states: "Whereas banking education anesthetizes and inhibits creative power, problem-posing education involves a constant unveiling or reality. The former attempts to maintain the submersion of consciousness; the latter strives for the emergence of consciousness and critical intervention in reality." I believe that the overall purpose of the text persuades people to understand that the current concept of teaching hinders students' ability to rely on themselves to come up with the answer. I believe that Freire achieved his goal of explaining both concepts, you can clearly understand that he is against the idea of the banking concept and wishes to replace it with the problem-posing concept.     Education, the process of taking in and applying information, is an important part of life that directly impacts an individual’s judgement and reasoning of both themselves and society. A person’s educational experience has the ability to influence their life despite their intelligence level or home life situation.     Freire believes that "Education is suffering from narration sickness" (1). He believes that students are being filled with just words and not with significant content. He says, "narration leads the students to memorize mechanically the narrated content. Worse yet, it turns them into containers, into receptacles to be filled"(Freire 1). Narration education is to make the teacher better not to help the students learn. The more humble and open a student is the better the student they are. Freire feels that the banking concept of education is, "in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits" (1). Knowledge should be thought of as a gift for those who will embrace themselves as being knowledgeable. Education must begin by allowing the student/ teacher role to coincide with each other and allow them to learn from each other. Banking education mirrors this contradiction of teacher being omnipotent and student being ignorant. Such examples of oppressing society are, “ the teacher teaches and the students are taught; the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing; the teacher talks and the students listen” (Freire2). This concept of education has always been around as long as I’ve been in school. In order for the teacher to prove herself as an educator the more content she has to fill the students with. It doesn’t matter if the students are actually learning and acknowledging the information but they are being presented it and tested on. As long as they repeat what was learned new content will keep being filed away. Freire believes that the “humanist, revolutionary educator cannot wait for this possibility to materialize…his efforts must coincide with those of the students to engage in critical thinking and the quest for mutual humanization” (4).…

    Freire describes the “banking” concept of education by saying that “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat” (Freire 244). He uses the metaphor of depositor and depositories to relate to a bank. The organized mindlessness of business between a bank and its contents is portrayed as the style of teaching which is seen as ineffective. It is seen in his eyes as unfavorable because the student does not have an opportunity to form his/her own ideas and think critically. On the other hand, Freire proposes the problem-posing style of education. He explains how power and authority are both mutual between the student and the teacher when he says, “The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach” (249). Freire stresses the importance of problems for the mind in order for critical thinking to take place. Because of the mind is at work, people are able to form their own opinions and ideas instead of just storing information and accepting it.     Education is defined as, "an act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for a mature life" (Jackson). In Paulo Freire 's “The Banking Concept of Education” he uses several similes, metaphors and analogies to bring across his main point - the relationship between teachers and students, and the way the teaching process takes place. One specific problem that Freire points out in the "Banking" concept of education is that “students have become “containers,” into "receptacles" to be "filled" by the teacher. The more completely he fills the receptacles, the better a teacher he is. The more meekly the receptacles permit themselves to be filled, the better students they are” (Freire, para 4). Freire believes that there is another way to educate in the classroom that would not only benefit the students but help the teachers as well. In the “Problem-Posing” method the teacher would begin by explaining his point of view on the subject being taught, and then the student could take the information and use it to his or her advantage by implementing the information in their lives. Problem-posing is more than a technique that teaches critical thinking; it is a philosophy, a way of thinking about students and their ability to think critically and to reflect analytically on their lives (Nixon-Ponder). In this classroom teaching style, the student has moved from being a spectator to a re-creator, together the teachers and students help each other learn through authentic thinking. Both the student and teacher are able to add to their knowledge using the information from one another’s ideas. Freire points out in his essay, "Education must begin with the solution of the teacher-student contradiction, by reconciling the poles of the contradiction so that both are simultaneously teachers and student"…
