Paul Revere’s engraving shows British troops on one side holding their rifles up and firing in a line against the helpless colonists. In reality, the fighting broke out on both sides who were antagonizing each other. Another inaccuracy in Paul’s engraving was that the dead man lying closest to the British soldiers was a black man named Crispus Attucks, but in-group preference was high for white people at this point so Paul Revere made him look white in the engraving so that it would get a more sympathetic reaction from the other colonists.…
In this article the author recalls the events which took place during the Bull Run. It was a battle between the north and the south. The author opens with the attacking against federal troop in Baltimore. While in the north rails and telegraph lines where cut. Rumors started to fly around about how the Pawnees were going to attack the city by setting it on fire. However that never happened. The confederates were smart but they underestimate their opponents. They knew a wars was coming and they knew when. They would receive coded messages which told them the union army was on the march. Beauregard wanted to take Washington. He had a plan of combining the west and east to attack McDowell only because he was out numbered and needed help. Then…
Even though the British referred to the Continental Army as a “rabble in arms” (McCullough 25), the author carefully paints his story to show how the colonists were prepared to defeat the British. He does so by mentioning the fact that the size of the Continental Army was twice the size of the British Army that was occupying Boston: “[T]here were perhaps 7,000 of the King’s men in Boston, or roughly half the number under Washington’s command.” (McCullough 25). Although the British troops were better trained and had more experience than the volunteers who were a part of the American army, the multitude in number was still a notable quality of Washington’s men that foreshadowed their ultimate victory.…
Right after the battle at Lexington and Concord, around 20,000 men, specifically Minutemen, surrounded Boston, clearly outnumbering the British troops. With high hopes that the English King would address the Americans’ grievances, the Second Continental Congress decided to meet in Philadelphia. They, however, had no concrete intention of being independent from Britain. To make sure that their voices were heard, they sent a second list of their grievances to Parliament. They also decided that they needed money for a new navy and army, selecting George Washington to be the commander of the army. Despite the fact that Washington had never commanded a full on army, he was tall and looked like a leader, which gave the colonists hope. He possessed many of the qualities that a real leader needs: patience, courage, self-discipline, and a great sense of justice. He was quite fit to be a leader, and a great one at that.…
Another man, Simon Winship gives account of his experience on the night of the Battle at Lexington and Concord. He states that he was riding his horse on the public road in Lexington, unarmed, when he was approached by the British troops and ordered to dismount his horse. When he asked why, he was removed from his horse by force from the British commanders. The commanding men ordered Winship to march with the troops. He refused, but somehow ended up marching with them for half of a quarter of a mile. The troops were told to halt, prime and load their weapons. The troops then marched on until they came into contact with Captain Parker’s militia. He then recounts that an officer at the head of the said British troops, “flourished his sword, and with a loud voice, giving the word fire, fire, which was instantly followed by a discharge of arms from said troops”. Winship accounts that he is positive that there was no discharge of arms from either side until the word fire was given by the said officer.…
Said by leader of the Lexington militia, Captain John Parker. On April 19, 1775, gunshots were heard all around the world. We, the continental army and patriots were up against the world’s strongest nation in the Battle of Lexington and Concord. A British party, led by Major John Pitcairn who claims that the colonists were scaredy cats and will run away once seeing the British army, comes upon Captain John Parker’s army. Parker’s army faced with several armed redcoats back away to move home; only a few remain. The men of Lexington wait and wait till the British comes and then there it goes.. the shot fired from an unknown side resulted in a…
Even though the British were victorious in capturing Philadelphia, William Howe inability to follow his higher ups set plan and his army being ill-equipped to deal with the extreme weathers, lead to the British downfall. The plan would have led Howe to New York to support St. Leger and Burgoyne forces. Because his army stayed put in Philadelphia, St. Leger and Burgoyne faced agonizing defeats at Bennington, Vermont, Oriskany, and Saratoga. A united British front with be all most impossible for the Americans to overcome but either because of miscommunication…
But that did not stop the colonists from resuming their attack The British, for their part, tried to keep the colonists at bay with flanking parties and canon fire. In the evening a contingent of newly arrived minutemen from Salem and Marblehead, Massachusetts, purportedly had a chance to cut off the Redcoats and perhaps finish them off. Instead, their commander ordered them not to attack, and the British were able to reach the safety of Charlestown Neck where they got help from the navel”.…
The Boston massacre was the first battle of the american revolution. Paul Revere wanted to get more people to be on their side so that they could go to war with Britain to gain their freedom. So that they didn’t have to by the tea that went along with the tea act passed by parliament.…
I have noticed that many people make many misconceptions about Paul Revere's midnight ride. Thanks to my first hand encounter of the event, I can finally set the record straight. The first misconception people make, is that Paul Revere rode alone. This is simply untrue, I remember him riding the side a shoemaker, named William Dawes and a doctor, named Samuel Prescott. I know this because I saw the three of them be captured by British troops. Prescott and Dawes were able to escape and make it to Concord. Paul Revere did not make it to Concord, he was held by the British until the morning of April 19th, the next day after the ride. He did however make it to Lexington, where he warned John Hancock and Samuel Adams that they must leave…
Which rider makes it through South Bridge to warn the colonists in Concord that the British are coming? Paul Revere…
Paul Revere is known for his famous ride through Charlestown, Virginia on April eighteenth, 1775 at midnight. There are countless stories that have been published about this famous ride, but copious amounts of them are inaccurate. “Paul Revere’s Ride,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is not a credible source of information considering Revere does not execute the same things within these two pieces of literature, the British’s actions are not the same in the poem and the letter, and Revere is not alone on this famous night.…
The people of Boston wished to be free of British reign, a goal that was not possible until all ties with Britain were cut. To achieve this goal, the Bostonians purposefully escalated the situation in Boston, causing more discourse between the colonies and Britain. This is exemplified in the testimony of William Tant, a Boston citizen, who claims that the Bostonian rioters were taunting the soldiers to “Fire, fire, and be damned,” essentially asking the soldiers to fire at the rioters (Document 2). Moreover, in Captain Preston’s, the captain of the British soldiers, account of the…
“The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes for your enemies. It comes from friends and loved ones.” Thus was never truer than in war. America has had many wars, and the American Revolution was only the beginning. The American Revolution was probably the biggest war because it declared our independence. During the American Revolution there were many traitors and spies. There was one big spy and soon to be traitor to the Americans. Benedict Arnold was a huge hero to many of the patriots and many looked up to him. Little did they know he was making a plan for the patriots to fail at West Point. Because Benedict Arnold’s plan was discovered by the patriots, the British were at a great disadvantage during the American Revolution and this led to the birth of a new nation.…
An average man is cruising down the street and comes across an old Harley-Davidson motorcycle for sale. The man buys the bike for a cheap deal thinking he can just put some money and parts into it to get it up and running. Due to the age of the bike from the 1950’s, the man is obligated to call Harley to get the parts. When describing the bike to Harley representatives, he is being transferred over and over until the CEO of the company comes on the line. The CEO asks the man if there is an inscription under the rear fender of the bike and there it was, reading: “To Elvis, Love, Priscilla.” The CEO offers the man $4 million for the bike and he accepts. The man becomes a multi-millionaire over night.…
