Patience and Longsuffering
Patience and Longsuffering

After observing things over time and thinking about how we react to situations, I thought it might be fitting to talk about patience. This is a newly acquired gift for me personally. I remember praying and praying for God to give me patience with people that I had to deal with on a regular basis, but I wasn’t really prepared for what was to come with gaining and learning patience. At the time, I thought if I could just deal with the person I would be able to deal with the situation, but it never dawned on me that I had to have patience in/with both. We all know this is far from easy. Most of our first thoughts were probably “yeah right!” Because as soon as something happens in our life that we don’t like or understand we start complaining. This is when we have to lean on other virtues, specifically, Self-control, humility, and generosity. Which leads us to the Fruits of the Spirit….

I.

Fruits of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Longsuffering is a very big part of having patience. It is also a gift from God! What makes long suffering a “gift” and why would God want to give us something that hurts? (Allow responses/examples) This is a gift because we, as Christians, must be patient. Waiting on the Lord shapes our Christian character. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, He produces "the fruit of the Spirit" on the inside of us. This does not mean that we must be hush mouth and never mention our

There is Chinese proverb that states “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” My steps began at oblivion. Oblivion followed by acceptance, to accountability, transformation, and finally peace. Initially I was oblivious to any really need for me to become patient. I chose it as the attribute to improve on because it was an area that I wasn’t perfect in. Little did I know how much damage it was doing to me and those I love.…

We see it with the two verbs: being drunk with wine which leads to debauchery, but being filled with the Spirit, which leads to joy in fellowship and obedience to the commandments of the Lord’s will (Hoehner, 702). Just like those who become drunk with wine, those who are filled with the Spirit can no longer control their actions. Those who have the spirit give up their own will to the Lord. Those who walk and are filled with the Spirit, then the Spirit of God is directed and empowers the believer to live their life in a way that is pleasing to God and also to his will. “Believers are commanded to be filled by the Spirit so that they will understand the will of the Lord and allow God’s control of their lives, thus providing enablement to make the most of every opportunity rather than succumbing to the desires of the flesh” (Hoehner, 705). Believers should not only walk wisely, but be filled with the Spirit. All of these are very beneficial to the believers and are pleasing to…
