CA policy
• If student misses CA due to following reasons:
– valid MC (not from Chinese doctor) – passing away of immediate family (parents, siblings, grandparents) – participate in an activity representing NTU then the CA component will be counted towards the final exam. There will be no makeup CA.

• Otherwise student gets 0 for CA.

Particulate Technology
Particulate systems impact a number of industries including advanced materials, environmental, chemical, mineral, energy, agricultural, pharmaceutical, and food processing. Particle technology deals with the characterization, modification, handling, production and utilization of a wide variety of particles, in both dry and wet conditions. Recently, these issues are being reinvestigated for the nano- and bio-technologies.

Important process of isolation that is commonly used is to vacuum filter a solution that allows for the separation of insoluble substances present in a solution. The decision to choose vacuum filtration against another method such as gravity filtration is due to the suction pressure in vacuum filtration that creates faster and more effective suction [1]. Once separated, purifying a substance can occur by recrystallizing the solid substance by heating it in water to its boiling point, making it fully dissolved and soluble due to the added source of energy. Then reversing the conditions by cooling the solution, allows pure substance to form crystals at a higher temperature with other ‘like’ crystals that make the substance more pure, while the impurities remain dissolved in the solution till the solution is further…

Most of the materials we encounter in everyday life are not pure substances. Many materials such as sand are formed from physical combination of various substances, and are called mixtures. Mixtures can be classified into homogeneous and heterogeneous. The purpose of this lab is to learn how to separate individual components from a mixture through decantation, filtration, distillation, and crystallization.…

The Purpose of lab 1.4 Measuring Volume by Displacement of Water was to determine the fraction of air in different granulated solids. The lab cocised of one test done on four different granular solid; with up to 3 trials on each solid. When all tests are done and put in tables, and the calculations are made, the conclusion is that grain size does not affect that fraction of air. To be able to find the fraction of air, 3 measurement had to be taken, the volume of the solid with air, the volume of water, and the volume of the solid with water.…

The mean particle size of the microspheres ranged from 300 μm – 2 mm. The mean size increased with increasing X2 (1:2 to 1:3) which produces a significant increase in the viscosity, leading to the formation of larger size emulsion droplets and finally a higher microsphere size particularly in IG method. The mean size was also influenced by X3. It is observed that microspheres prepared using ESD method does not show a significant variation in their mean size value. Notably, in IG method, when X2 ratio was increased from 1:2 to 1:3 there was formation of microspheres with larger sizes due to an increase in solution viscosity of the polymer sodium…
