Some people may argue that alcohol and cigarettes cause many problems such as addictions and cancer. Gambling also causes problems that families may find just as harmful. However, South Dakota neither owns nor controls alcohol or cigarette industries, unlike their video lottery industry. An adequate way to raise money would not ruin the state’s constitutions. If South Dakota found another way to raise funds other than by instigating an addicting activity such as gambling, the families of South Dakota would be better…

Just a decade ago gambling was limited to two cities in the United States, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Today there are only two states that don't have some form of legalized gambling, such as lotteries or bingo. Since commercial casino gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931, the public attitude toward gambling has shifted from prohibition to permissiveness. Pamela M. Prah discovered in 2004, that there are "11 states that have commercial casinos, six have riverboats or docked casinos, and 23 states have within their borders casinos that are owned and operated by American Indian tribes." There is no doubt that legalized gambling has "exploded in the region and around the country, from the internet and multistate…

The expansion of legalized gambling poses a number of issues for policymakers. Two related issues, which have not been dealt with extensively from a public policy perspective, are examined in this commentary: state responsibility for addressing pathological and problem gambling, and the legal status and regulation of Internet gambling. A review of the recommendations of the 1998 National Gambling Impact Study Commission on pathological and problem gambling as well as state policies and practices indicates that little has been accomplished in dealing with the need for education, prevention, and treatment. Confusing and contradictory legislation and policies abound. Internet gambling flourishes, and federal and state governments are ambivalent about legalizing it. Both problem gambling and regulation of Internet gambling urgently need attention. The legalization and regulation of commercial gambling involves a wide range of public policy issues. These include such matters as how jurisdictions decide to legalize gambling in the first place, and what forms of gambling to legalize (e.g., lotteries, casinos, pari-mutuel racing, bingo). Another policy issue faced by jurisdictions that already have some form of legal gambling is the decision of whether or not to expand existing forms or add new ones. Once gambling has been legalized, jurisdictions face the issue of how to regulate it. For gambling businesses to succeed, gamblers need to be confident that the games are honest and that they will be paid if they win. One role of regulatory agencies is to ensure that gambling activities occur in such a manner that these conditions are met. Decisions about all these matters are made in a highly politicized environment and are shaped by a variety of competitive forces. The initial decision to legalize any form of gambling is typically supported by those likely to benefit financially or politically in some way and opposed by…

    The Apportionment Problem

For this assignment, I needed to find out how many representatives are going to be assigned to each of the 10 states in the newly democratic nations. The first step was to add all of the state’s populations together. The total population is 532,188. The next step was to divide each individual states population by the total population to see how many seats that each state should receive for representation. After I have a percentage, I give a representative for each whole number. Once I add up the whole numbers, I have 95 out of my 100 seats spoken for. The remaining seats need to be assigned out by the highest fractional value of each state. The chart below shows these steps and the totals of each representative per state. (I am questioning if this is right. I would assume that each state should have a representative but state 5 did not get one, even with the extra states and the fractional numbers.)…

In the US, around two million people suffer from pathological gambling, but as many as six million suffer from problem gambling. A statistic published by the Gazette using data from 1999 shows that pathological gamblers made up two million, or 0.8 percent, of the US population, while problem gamblers made up six million, or 2 percent, of the US population. A lack of growth in the number of problem gamblers shows that despite large-scale casino development, gambling addiction is holding steady in numbers.…

For this project I chose the sport of drag racing. I could have chosen one that is so familiar to everyone, but I don’t know a lot about those. Drag racing is a sport that my entire family enjoys and you would think that we would be NASCAR fans because of it, but we’re not. They are two totally different sports. There is nothing like standing at the starting line, feeling the rumble of those powerful engines, the anticipation building as they rev their engine and the tree goes from red, orange, yellow to green, at that very second it’s like your heart stops beating and a primal roar escapes from your mouth and you are holding…

Gambling can become a serious addiction and just as serious as alcohol or drug abuse. Some find gambling to be a distraction taking them away from the problems of their everyday life. Many examples of gambling are sports betting and casinos, which are illegal in most states, horse betting, card playing, playing the lottery and now there are websites for betting online. According to Little (2011), “The ability to fund the activity through online bank transactions and credit cards contributes to addictive online gambling” (para. 3). For those that have an addiction to gambling, online games and websites, makes it harder for them to resist the urge to gamble as well as making it easier for them to gamble, since they can now do it in the privacy of their home.…

Interest rate is the cost of borrowing money. The Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates to stabilize the economy. This is one of the fiscal policies they have applied to correct this problem. Yes, the recession of 2007 has caused for lowered interest rates in 2013. The economy has been on a downturn and one of the ways to turn this downward flow around is to lower interest rates. Applying low interest rates will help households across the states save money in addition to businesses finance new spending ("Why Are Interest Rates Being Kept at a Low Level?" 2013). Furthermore, because of the lowering of interest rates, the United States dollar is depreciating. Another policy the government has created is monetary incentives for businesses in hopes of getting them to hire more employees. This process will work however maybe not in the timeframe people want it to happen. Overall, the Federal Reserve plays a vital role in that depreciation however, it has to for the economy to…

Computer Games – it is a bane – a menace to society – both for young and old ones. Behind the fact that they are challenged to be at their best in decision-making and reasoning, much of their time is being wasted up. Staying in a computer room for a long period of time is a big no-no! Yes it is fun to play, but it creates problems at the back of such pleasure. Negligence to perform other chores is one; negligence to do school assignments is one; and lack of enough sleep is another one. Hence, pleasure is…
