Parental Engagement Paper
The researchers explained the focus of the paper, the subjects, and methods used in a way that was understandable and useful to me because as a child my parents were never really engaged with my schooling so I can definitely agree and relate to the points that were made. My mother who has an authoritarian parenting style sometimes attended parent teacher meetings and would volunteer to help with some activities every once in a while like selling raffle tickets. However, when it came down to being involved with my actual schooling she was not heavily involved and even when she tried to be it was more of a negative outcome because of her aggressive behavior and response given if I gave an incorrect answer. My father was rarely ever involved or engaged, he would just pay tuition and ask questions like “how was school today?” at the dinner table or when he came home from work. The only other time my father would inquire about my learning was when he saw my midterm or final report card.

Thankfully, I had an Aunt who was a teacher and took on that role as she invested a lot into my education and was heavily engaged apart from school. I can remember sitting on the gallery with her singing the times

What are some of the factors preventing parental engagement, and what are some possible solutions?

Do you think that more parents become involved with the first stage of the continuum if they were able to do so electronically or via the internet? Why or why not? (For example having a website that parents are able to access a recording of parent teacher meetings that they might have missed as well as have polls that allow them to vote on different issues or concerns and be able to comment on different matters or make suggestions.)

If parents are unable to engage due to lack of knowledge, what are some ways to overcome this

    In addition to being convincing, the article was well researched with many reputable resources. Additionally, Law provided her own data from the results of kidsREAD program instead of leaving the reader to wonder what the results looked like. In my opinion, Law could have compared the end results with children of middle to upper income families. By doing that, we can see if the children from low-income families are almost caught up to their classmates. It would also show if the one-hour weekly reading session helped or hurt the low-income students. While reading the article it felt like low-income and at risk was repeated multiple times. Yes, research is important and so is the data to back it up, but nearly two pages of repeating it for two pages is a little much. It can make readers stop reading the article if they feel it will only repeat what has been said. Despite the repetition, the article was not one sided as it focused on low-income and at-risk students.
