The Challenging Life of a Muslim Teenager
The life of a Muslim teenager living in the modern western society of Canada can be very challenging. The Muslim faith is rooted in tradition and strong belief. Muslims face a plethora of challenges including but not limited to, discrimination, modesty, and prayer. Muslims hold their faith very dear which is sometimes difficult for those of western heritage to understand. Muslim teenagers are discriminated against because of their faith, mocked because of their modesty, and subject to suspicion because of their prayer.
Firstly, since the 9/11 terrorists attacks innocent Muslims have been the easiest targets of discrimination. Due to the way that Islam is portrayed in the media in recent years the public has become weary of Muslims. The media ignorantly questions their beliefs and labels all Muslims as terrorists. This has made it increasingly difficult for Muslim teenagers to truly live out their faith in fear of further discrimination and judgement from their peers. Furthermore, it is incredibly challenging for Muslim teenagers, for women, to practice modesty in the name of Islam. Our society teaches that a woman body is the key to her success. Society says that if a woman want to go anywhere in life she must show her body in order to achieve her goals. Islam teaches the exact opposite. Muhammad calls women to be modest in their dress. Islam teaches that through modesty should be judged based on their intelligence. In the western eye this is seen as a form of oppression against women. Many Muslim women struggle to find the middle way in dress and modesty.
Moreover, it has become increasingly difficult to pray. Devout Muslims must pray five times a day in order to fulfill the pillars of Islam that all Muslims must abide by. It is challenging to explain to a teacher who is not understanding the importance of prayer especially during ...
