Paradise Hotel: Critique

Paradise Hotel On the first day of theatre class, when we were told we must watch some plays and write a critique for each one, I gave a sigh of annoyance; however, when I attended the play “Paradise Hotel”, my entire view on plays have changed. Paradise Hotel exceeded my expectations in many ways, making it one of the most enjoyable experience I have ever had. The comedy and wittiness of all of the characters gave me a couple of chuckles and at some times made my stomach hurt from the laughter. Another reason why I believe this play was one of the greatest work of art I have witnessed is because of how it was performed. Usually most people see actors doing their job in movies and short films, where they are able to take cuts and reedit their work. However, for a theatrical play, the actors are not able to do that. They must perform their roles in one entire time frame without the use of computer technology. They must also memorize all of their lines and be able to improvise if something didn’t go according to the plan. I believe the theme of the play was infidelity. Infidelity is the act of cheating, adultery, and is a breach of an expectation of sexual or emotional exclusivity. Usually this involves trust, betrayal, lying, and also disloyalty. I would agree with the play’s message because this type of action happens in the real world all the time. People across the country have affairs, which in the end always lead to lies and manipulation of others. Infidelity can not only be physical intimacy, but also emotional intimacy, which is equally bad because it could potentially ruin a once, healthy relationship. I believe the protagonists of this play is Benoit Pinglet and Marcelle Paillardin. With Pinglet’s wife nagging on the time and not giving him the respect he wants, he seeks out another woman to satisfy his needs and desires. In regards to Marcelle Paillardin, she is sick and tired of her husband due to the lack

Much like other plays at City College of New York, it is important to understand the focus on acting and the delivery of text to improve the audience experience. These plays do not rely on expensive and elaborate stage design, which often rely on a black curtain or black backdrop to bring out the actors to the forefront of the stage. Tuttle has actually increased the costume and musical delivery of this play by having these simple backdrops to frame the actors. Again, it is the minimalist style that allows Zimmerman’s text to be the focal point in which the actor can become more directly involved with the audience. More so, the stage is closer to the audience, which allows a more direct and less elaborate distraction in this type of dramatic presentation.…

    2. The author believes that after many consecutive actions presented by the audience, a pattern starts to develop. This pattern demonstrates that Monday’s audience is generally quite. I believe most people are caught off guard on Monday’s. They haven’t gotten the motivation to act their happiest after having two days off from work then back to the same daily grind. People generally despise Mondays, so the bad attitude towards being at work or school again can be displayed throughout everything that occurs during that day, they lack the momentum. Everything that happens throughout the day can affect how a person responds to a play. From the weather to even what the news is like on the day. Wednesdays are usually hard for people because Wednesdays are a “tease.” It’s so close yet so far away. Wednesdays are the days most people feel agitated to get finished with their 9-5 routines, they’re feeling impatient and irritable. Whatever is affecting one deeply can also affect how one displays your emotions towards a play. It is seemingly harder for someone to make you laugh when you’re already feeling bitter.…

There is nothing earnest about this play, at least on the surface. It’s a giant critism of the Victorian era, when middle class behavior governed everything from communication to sexuality. The most important rules applied to marriage and were always a popular topic in Victorian plays, and one that interested Wilde, who was married to a woman but sexually involved with men.…

The first scene (Act I), deals with the characters of the play’s main plot: Leantio, Bianca and the Mother. In this scene, the readers come across with the insulting behaviour towards Bianca, where she is treated as an object. Leantio speaks of his wife with words of business, to him she is “the most unvalued’st purchase” (I.ii). He describes her as if she was a dangerous object that must stay hidden and safe, away from the sight of men. When he talks about her, it is obvious that Bianca is for him a treasure and he is the thief that now has to hide his “best piece of theft” (I.ii) in a safe place so no one will steal it from him. Such words describing a human being are rather cruel, especially when Leantio is talking about a person for whom he is supposed to have true and pure feelings of love.…

This play was written in a time where women and men did not always choose who they got married to. Women did not have the same rights as men in the shakespearian time, therefore most women had arranged marriages. Men were allowed to do whatever they please, but women were expected to be put together all of the time. A family's reputation could be ruined by the action of one daughter, sister ect. In today’s society people do things that wouldn’t even be imaginable back then. We are surrounded by a society telling us that chastity is not important, that is something you would never hear of in the Shakespearean time.…

Sex: the theme seen in many a book and play, can be seen in Measure for Measure in many different places. This theme is the biggest and most intricate one throughout this play. It is seen more with death, venality, and decay in this seeming dark, dismal play. Why? Because there are brothels everywhere and venereal diseases run rampant, killing many a lover and whore. There is also the rise in illicit children due to all of these brothels even though they do use safe measures to make sure their girls do not become pregnant.…

After we performed our performance, we notice some minor but key error to improve on. A prominent error that I noticed in our performance was that some of the timing was off through out the entirety of the play. Also, I also noticed that we still did not know all our lines completely especially during the singing parts. To work on eliminating these mistakes, we realized more practice and rehearsal was just needed. Through practicing and rehearsing outside of class we worked on the errors and they were virtually gone. We all memorized our lines completely with a still few spaces left for improvisation during our performance, such as when Kim ask Luke if he wants tap or bottled water and he can say what he suites best at the moment and also in the ending scene where we are all saying our decision and we all have a bit of room for some improvisation and say what we suite best to say at the moment.…
