Paper Industry 5 Forces Analysis
Assignment 2 – Five Forces Analysis on Paper Industry

The SIC code I use to discuss in the assignment is 2621 Paper Mill. As we learned in Module 3, there is a five forces analysis. Today, we are going to use five forces to analyze the paper industry.
Current Competitors:

As we can see from the above diagram, we can know that paper industry is averagely in a low growth or even negative growth since 2009. IBISWorld states that the revenue of paper industry dropped dramatically in 2009 due to the global economic recession, which consumers decrease their spending. The other factor might be the increasing of using electronic products. In the report of “Paper Mill” which is from Encyclopedia of Global Industries, US paper company, International Paper Company (IP), expended to a global producer of paper and paper products via many acquisitions worldwide in 1980s and 1990s. Nowadays, International Paper company is the largest paper output company with 12,901 thousand tons in the world. The other companies in top five are Japan-based Oji Paper Co., Ltd with 10,721 thousand tons, Finland based UPM-Kymmene Oyj with 10,700 thousand tons, China-based Nine Dragons Paper Ltd. with 10,450 and Finland-based Stora Enso Oyj with 10,268 thousand tons. The data is ranked by the amount of output and retrieved from Gale Business Insights: Essentials 2015. We can know that the using amount of paper is increasing in Asia-Pacific region. The reason is that their economic scale is growing rapidly these years, so the demand of paper is increasing. As for Finland, the country’s natural resource of forest is their advantageous point. So there are two Finland-based companies in top five. The other paper companies’ output amount is not as much as the above companies, because there is high brand identity in paper industry. So paper consumers, such as printers, publishers and so on usually will rely on certain firms.
Suppliers:
To produce paper needs pulpwood and it is not the only one

    Forrest Hill Case Analysis

The environment in which Forest Hill Paper Company operates in is a cyclical environment with upswings every three to four years. Due to the cyclical nature of the industry, customers try to anticipate times when they would not be able to get paper by ordering large quantities of paper at certain times and none at others. Because of this, FHPC has times when they are flushed with orders and cannot meet them with their production capabilities, and times when they are not running at optimal levels due to lack of demand. Along with this issue, the market share for domestic paperboard has been steadily declining. The most significant reason there is a decline in market share is the moving trend toward plastic and more environmentally friendly forms of paperboard. In general throughout the industry, companies have made little effort to expand capacities of the production facilities. At times the demand greatly exceeds the capacity of any one production plant. In boom times the industry as a whole experiences great increases in selling price for the paperboard products for most of the grades of paper.…

Stermon Mills was a small, independent paper producer that was founded in 1910. The company had one pulping plant and four paper machines housed in 20 buildings. Stermon historically focused on uncoated fine papers since coated papers required additional equipment and mechanical papers could not be produced in its pulping plant. Demand for uncoated paper had been quite strong for an extended period of time, but significant capacity expansion combined with softening demand in 1989-92 had led to excess capacity and low prices. According to exhibit 5, in 1991 the top 10 paper companies had 77% share of US market of uncoated fine paper. The result was that several larger producers had significant economies of scale and could provide…

In examining the information provided by Birch Paper Company (BPC) it became apparent that due to the decentralized manner in which BPC operates its four production divisions, the overall maximization of profits for BPC could be jeopardized if policies and procedures are not immediately established for setting transfer prices between divisions. Although, the decentralization of BPC's divisions certainly have proved successful in the past, it is critical for BPC to establish more concise guidelines to ensure that all the decisions that are made by each division are goal congruent and maximizing BPC's profits.…
