Pap Finn Argumentative Essay
The next day, Huck receives a scolding from Miss Watson because of his dirty clothes, but the Widow Douglas does not reproach him at all. Miss Watson explains to Huck that, through prayer, he can have anything he wants. She makes Huck pray for the next few days, and Huck does not understand why the fishhooks he prays for never arrive.

During this time, Huck is told that his father, Pap Finn, has been found drowned in the river. Because the body was floating on his back, the superstitious Huck does not believe it is Pap and worries that the violent Pap will show up again. The Tom Sawyer Gang disbands because the only adventure they have is attempting to rob a Sunday-school

One time, Pap locked Huck in the cabin and “was gone three days” (35). It is evident Pap Finn does not care about Huck’s well-being; when Pap could be spending time with his son, he is always too busy drinking or trying to get the money from Judge Thatcher. Unlike Pap, who willingly ignores his son for days at a time, Jim tries to stay near Huck at all times and worries when they become separated. When Huck and Jim reunite on the river, Jim says to Huck, “Goodness gracious, is dat you, Huck? En you ain’ dead…it’s too good to be true” (94). Jim’s reaction is so important because it shows that Jim cares about Huck more than anyone else, especially Pap. If Huck had been raised by a father who cared about him, Jim’s reaction and the friendship that Huck developed with Jim would be less meaningful. By creating such a strong contrast between Pap and Jim’s opinion of Huckleberry, Mark Twain is able to create a stronger bond between Huck and Jim than he could without the neglectful behavior of…

Despite the conflicting public opinion, Chris McCandless succeeded in his goal to survive in the wilderness and taught the world valuable lessons in the process. Chris McCandless “probably died on August 18th, 112 days after he had walked into the wild.” (119, Krakauer) He survived with very little gear and food, even though he was essentially cut off from the world. To have lived for a little over three months totally self-sufficient is impressive. Chris’s goal was to be independent and live off the land for a while. In his mindset, he achieved in his goal. Wayne Westerberg had employed Chris for two short amounts of time, but said “He was the type of person who insisted on living out his beliefs.” (Krakauer, 67) This was why Chris was determined to go to Alaska, instead of listening to the protests of others.…

Before Huck met Jim the run-away slave, Huck never felt loved because he never had anyone who looked out for him but the Widow and Miss Watson. Although they were Huck’s only support, Huck never appreciated them just from the fact that they expect him to be more “sivilized”. Pap never expected anything from Huck but getting more liquor for him. Even the friends of Huck believe that Pap means nothing to Huck. “Yes, he’s got a father, but you can’t never find him, these days. He used to lay drunk with the hogs in the tan yard, but he hain’t been seen in these parts for a year or more”. (pg 6) People talking about Pap like this make it seem like Pap has been laying home drunk for a long time. Huck himself also describes Pap in an off putting way. Huck says that Pap is unpleasantly pale, long greasy hair, disgusting, and terribly dressed. This imagery that Twain projected convinces the reader that Huck really hates his father that much. Considering these dilemmas, it is fair to say that Pap is nowhere near a father of Huck or a father in general. Pap seems more like the devil or a hole to this society…

Being in an Internship at the ICEI (Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative) program at Westfield State University has allowed me to have a better perspective on what people with disabilities could potentially benefit from. ICEI (Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative) is a program that attends to people with disabilities aged 18-21, from Westfield and nearby public school districts. Art Therapy is one of the programs that is offered through ICEI and if it could be implemented correctly, I could see it being extremely beneficial to students of the disabled population as well as neuro-typical students. Art Therapy has been shown to mutually benefit the student, peer, and teacher. It has also been an amazing way to open the door for verbal/non-verbal…
