Pangu Creator
English H, Period 2
16 December 2013

Pangu: Creator of the world "The Creation of Heaven and Earth" is a myth that first appeared in Sanwu Liji written by Xu Zheng in the Three Kingdoms Period of ancient China and was spread from the southern ethnic minorities since then, including the Miao and Yao. The story began with the heaven and the earth existing as a whole of chaos that resembled an egg. Pangu, the creator of heaven and earth, slept for 18,000 years inside the turbid “egg” and finally woke up, surprised, in suffocated darkness and chaos. He cut through the darkness with his powerful axe until it exploded, which spitted the heaven and the earth. Pangu held the heaven up with his hands and troded his legs on the land to

These ideas have passed on in Chinese history and are celebrated and honored by normal Chinese. As a tradition, the merits of bravery and determination are applauded and encouraged in family and taught as a life lesson. At the end of the legendary myth, by sacrificing himself, Pangu finally accomplishes his life-long dream of creating a new and beautiful universe with stars, mountains, rivers, etc., for the future of all the other beings. “Pangu felt suffocated [and was determined to fight back and break through the darkness] so he cracked the egg with a broad ax.” In the Chinese culture, they believe heroes, who have bravery, determination, and the willing to fight and sacrifice for others and have created wonderful achievements for China, such as advanced inventions. The Chinese hate cowards, who never even try to achieve accomplishments or fight against the evil ones. These cultural values affect the plot of this story because without the courage and determination inside Pangu, he wouldn’t have the strength and dedication of creating the two most important parts of the universe for others to live in. How the culture values affect the Chinese history and civilization greatly is shown frequently through the revolts and uprising against the corrupt government in Chinese history. It would give innocent people …show more content…
For example, Chinese culture places its values more in faith in personal relationships than in written rules and procedures for structuring interactions, while American culture values written rules that presumably apply to everyone and are assumed to produce fair, reasonable procedures and decisions. From Pangu’s legend, it seems that there is a common thing in Chinese and American culture, i.e., the hope for goodness and the courage to fight for it. From the beginning of world creation, there was always a hint of formal hierarchy in which they know their position and the customs for behavior in the situation. American cultures have the wishing of informal, egalitarian government where importance of social rankings minimizes. Throughout the Pangu creation myth, Chinese culture taught people to fight against the dark side and evil for a bright future, as evidenced by the frequent uprising against evil government in Chinese history. Both American and Chinese cultures value courage and determination. But the ways to show these values seem different, American culture taught people to directly discuss controversial topics and press personal opinions about what they consider the truth. In traditional Chinese culture, people usually do not like to confront face by face, but tell the difference in opinion in indirect ways. This culture difference could sometimes cause misunderstandings between

There are many ways in which Chinese and American cultures differ, among them attitudes about power, individualism, uncertainty avoidance and time management. Power distance is more centralized in American businesses than Chinese. Also, Americans tend to consider themselves more individually and Chinese consider themselves more collectively. Chinese people are more likely to avoid uncertainty and Americans have a more short-term mentality. Any one of these differences can cause major conflict in an organization, so it is important to understand each one.…

In the beginning, the heaven and earth were still one and all was in chaos. The universe was like a big black egg, carrying Pan Gu inside itself. After eighteen thousand years, Pan Gu woke up from a long sleep. Because he felt suffocated, he took up a broad ax and wielded it with all his might to crack open the egg in which he is in. He formed the heavens and the cold, turbid matter formed the earth. Pan Gu stood between them, his head touching the sky, his feet planted on the earth, so that the heaven and the earth would never join again. When Pan Gu died, his body parts became the things on earth. According to some versions of the Pan Gu legend, the sun shone when he was happy, but black clouds gathered in the sky when he was angry. One version of the legend has it that the fleas and lice on his body became the ancestors of mankind.…

Personality can be influenced by ones culture in a number of ways. One such example can be seen in individuals with authoritarian personalities. These personalities, often through cultural influence, tend to display mistrust in people from other cultures different from their own. In addition, these personalities also exhibit behavior which is supported by the authoritarian’s culture while generally questioning the behaviors of other people of differing culture with differing views from their own (McAdams, 2006).…

Although individuals handle particular situations differently, there are universal themes and rituals that span from culture to culture. Although these traits are inert they are witnessing first hand through the different perspectives and actions that each culture experiences. Different cultures tend to have contrasting values and beliefs which can lead to the questioning of the validity of other cultural practices. When there is cultural conflict between two separate societies, people tend to think that the opposing cultures values and morals are wrong because they differ from the views of each others, this develops into a cultural sense of ethnocentrism, which is the belief that ones own cultures values and beliefs…

One theme used to show Chinese culture is survival. For example, when Wang Lung’s family is struggling to find food, his sons steal meat, and they defend themselves by saying, “I took it – it is mine, this meat (Buck 112).” When it is hard to survive it can make a person do something that they wouldn’t normally do. Survival not only changes a person, but it also changes their outlook on life. While O-Lan was giving birth to another child Wang Lung is thinking, “Male or female it mattered nothing to him now – there was only another mouth coming which must be fed (Buck 81).” Trying to survive took Wang Lung’s excitement and turned it into worry. Pearl Buck is trying to show that if people are trying to survive that they will do anything possible.…

In the Chinese creation myth there was a large, black egg that carried all of creation. Inside of the egg there was a man named Pan Gu and after eighteen thousand years he awakes from a deep sleep. He felt suffocated so he uses a broadax to break open the egg to release himself. The light cleared off and floated up to become the heavens and the cold matter stayed below and became earth. Pan Gu lived in the middle, his head was touching the heavens and his feet were touching the earth. The heavens began to grow at ten feet per day and after another eighteen thousand years the earth and sky had become higher and thicker. Once Pan Gu died his breath became the wind and clouds. His voice became the thunder and one of his eyeballs became the sun and moon. His body and limbs became five large mountains and his blood formed the waters. His veins became far-stretching roads and his muscles the fertile land. The stars in the sky came from his hair and beard and the flowers and trees came from his skin and the hair on his body. Also the radiance of his eyes became thunder and lightning.…

One example is that in Japan it is more important to be respectful than it was in her home country of China. Not respectful like saying hello, but more in a different way such as not making others feel uncomfortable. If a student does well you would congratulate them alone after class and never single them out in the class and let everyone know how well they were doing. This would lead to major embarrassment and much grief. The thing she says she liked most about American culture is the freedoms it has. The people can do so many things she never dreamed of. They can even say what they feel even if it offends others. This also is one of the things she likes least. People in the American Culture she found can be unnecessarily rude to one another. She does not like the rudeness, but understands why the freedom to do so is…
