panel discussion
Moderator:Good Morning Ma,am Lasalita, Good Morning classmates. The Dept. of education has proposed to overhaul the basic and secondary education curriculum by adding 2 more years to the system. Our group will present a panel discussion on the merit of this proposal.

May I present to you the members of my panel. To my right areR1,R2, and R3. They will be presenting the side of the Dep. Of Education. While on my left side are L1, L2 and L3. This group is ready to present the critical group of youths, students, parents and academic community. Our group had conducted thorough research from the internet and had interviewed various groups. The result is some very interesting insights which we hope to present to you this morning. Please be attentive as you will be given a chance to ask questions or give additional information after our discussion.

The proposal, better known as K-12 had been met with criticism from various groups. But despite the negative reactions, DepEd seemed determined to enact the program arguing that the K-12 program will address the deteriorating quality of education in our country. Do you agree on this argument? R1 :Let me cite a school in the Mt. province named St. Mary’s of Sagada. This school had successfully implemented K-12 and as a result had been topping the National Achievement Test in the Mt. Province. What better proof do we need that K-12 will improve our present educational system? R2 :And may I add that the K-12 model had been patterned in the most advanced countries like the USA, Canada and Australia? No less than our Pres. PNoy had advocated this program to keep up with global standards and to make even high school graduates employable and to enable students to have more time to choose which careers best suit their abilities among other reasons. R3 :Let me just quote Sen. Edgardo Angara who chairs the Senate Committee on...

Critics of the said program cited different disadvantages that they deemed as the downfall of the said program. Many education advocates and groups said that the curriculum is half baked and that the government should focused first on the present problems that we are experiencing now, teachers in the basic education curriculum are not yet ready because of the subjects being taught in the College level are transferred in the basic education (Alliance of Concern Teachers and Teachers Dignity Coalition). In line with this, the notion of an additional two years of schooling does not seem to be appealing to parents who literally struggle to send their children to school. Worthy to examine is the rationale behind the introduction of the K-12 reform as enunciated by DepEd (Sergio,…

For most of the past decade, the entire educational system has come under close scrutiny. Partners in the educational process--parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, and even elected officials--have called repeatedly for a revitalized educational system that makes schooling more efficient, more holistic, more relevant, and less compartmentalized.…

The Department of Education’s planned shift to K+12 seeks to enhance the current curriculum and allow high school graduates to specialize and be equipped with skills to enter industry, a vocation or engage in entrepreneurial activity. Though reforms have been discussed since the Unesco Mission survey in 1949, it is only now that definite action on K+12 is being taken to move our education system up to international standards. But this does not end here. The move to K+12 is a gradual process that will need the time and commitment of all stakeholders, especially parents and teachers, because this kind of reform is not focused on one area alone but involves cohesive action from all sectors to address the needs of their communities.…

Through his logical and familiar depiction of the situation, highlighted by his use of humor, Kahn is able to translate a rather complex issue into an argument that anyone can understand and offers a solution. Even though he is the pioneer of this idea, his clear understanding and depiction of the situation lend weight to his idea, even to those who might now know who he is. Many would agree that there are problems with the education system and Kahn highlights those while also explaining why they happen. If someone then considers the success that Kahn has had with Kahn Academy, it is clear that his ideas have some merit. Perhaps the most compelling part of his argument is his portrait of what the future could be like with a better education system. With a little effort, perhaps in the not-so-distant future the education system could be improved enough to allow everyone to contribute to difficult problems facing…

MANILA, Philippines ? Senator Francis Escudero expressed alarm on Thursday over the increasing dropout rates in primary and secondary education levels. We should be able to graduate more students in both levels, if not achieve universal primary education by 2015, as targeted in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals,? said Escudero. Speaking at a forum on education at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati, Escudero urged the government to work sharply to reduce, if not eliminate, dropout rates in public elementary and high schools in six years. He cited a UN report in 2000, which showed that in nearly five decades since the 1960s, dropout rates at the public elementary level had remained high, with 28 to 34 percent failing to complete Grade 6.Citing the latest data from a separate study he did not identify, Escudero estimated that of the 100 children who entered Grade 1, only 86 moved on to Grade 2, 76 to Grade 4, 67 to Grade 6, and only 65 finally completed the six years of elementary education.Of the 65, only 58 enroll in high school and 45 are able to graduate, Escudero added. He said while the Department of Education (DepEd) had the biggest share of the national budget at P158.2 billion for 2009, it still did not meet the budgetary standard set by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), which is 6 percent of a country?s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).Education is the greatest equalizer. Most of the children who are left behind live in poverty and in remote areas. The next administration must aggressively move to narrow the education gap and increase education? share of the national budget to 20 percent,? said…

Cornelio, Mrs. Suyo says that K-12 was implemented to uplift the quality of education especially among our Filipino learning. She also agrees that K-12 is a good thing. To her, K-12’s main goal or focus is “to provide or equip our learners with lifelong learning skills and to produce learners who will become globally competitive and they will be able to survive in the cycle called life”. She thinks that K-12, although not immediately, will solve the unemployment problem. Asked about K-12’s effects on the parents, teachers, and students she says “The effect is varied depending on the person. Parents, somewhat negative as they were not given clear information on K-12. Teachers, they have a clear understanding of K-12 since they were trained on what K-12 education is about. Students, they find it strange, but eventually, they will be able to understand that it is for their own good”. She believes it is worth it as students are given enough time to think of their career while being equipped with skills necessary to aid that choice. She knows that the DepEd officials are prepared to proceed with K-12 but also stresses out the fact that none of them know what the current state is in the field. She is rather disappointed on some of the parents who complain about K-12 as they do not understand the beauty of K-12. Along with Mrs. Cornelio and Mrs. Mananquil, she says that there would be no financial problems on K-12 for senior high school is free in public schools and Government-assisted in private schools. She also brings a sigh of relief to professionals saying that the skills given to the K-12 senior high graduates are the ones needed in factories and farms leaving professional tasks…

Because our country is not ready to this program primarily the DepEd they have a trouble to handle such a big change in education curriculum. But on the other side, if handled very well by the officials and is given the right attention, sooner the Philippines will be able to produce competitive students as what they are aiming to have. we must first look for the benefits before we look at the negative sides since k-12 has a good chance for us to be globally competitive we must adopt to this changes even its hard for our country to give budget on education. More time spent in studying means more knowledge, so adding two years is a good idea. In addition, 12 years of basic education is one of the international standards for quality education. However, I think our government doesn't have the capacity to provide such kind of quality. Why? Because financial assistance is insufficient. Public schools can't provide enough reading materials. Also, it is ironic how they want teachers to utilize multimedia materials when in fact they can't provide those. Everything when we work together, no matter how and difficult impossible, definitely a good outcome. I see the future of K-12 program. We need our government as the main propagator of this k-12 curriculum , will be sensitive to everything, allocate the necessary funds for instructional materials, these buildings to construct and other necessary facilities. The teachers must be faithful to their oath, be an ideal being a good teacher to the students. Parents may be open minded and see the beauty and importance of this program for the future not only their children but as well as the future of the country. And above all, the students. They would be seriously study and do not ignore the goodwill of K-12 that is completely designed for the improvement of the quality education they…

To my fellow students, to my worthy, Mr. Moderator and to the board of Judges, ladies and gentleman a pleasant morning. I am the second speaker of the affirmative who strongly believe on the proposition “ Resolved that K-12 Education system be abolished” based on the following contentions to wit: First, K-12 curriculum is a proposal of government that would add two more years to the secondary or High School level. So therefore, we have 6 years in grade school and another 6 years on high school. K-12 education system implemented in our country is a bad idea for me. There are too many glaring factors and reasons on why this is a bad idea at this time. First, Poverty.…
