Dubai, one of the 7 emirates of UAE is famous for gold and oil. UAE became independent in 1971, that is 24 years after India got independence and today Dubai surpasses the western world in terms of development. The UAE is a small nation (Area-83,600 km2) that is only around twice the size of Kerala. To its north lies Persian Gulf (The Ocean). It shares it’s boundary with Saudi Arabia to the west and south, Oman to the East and Qatar to the northwest. [pic] Fig 1.1 Map of UAE
1.2 THE NEED FOR THE ISLANDS Dubai’s booming economy was built on revenues from the oil industry after oil was discovered there in mid 1960s. However scientist predicted the oil reserve will die out around 2016. Therefore the prince of Dubai (Sheikh Muhammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum) wanted to decrease Dubai’s dependency on oil. The sheikh wanted Dubai to earn more from tourism. He wanted Dubai to be converted into a world class tourist destination. This led Dubai to increase the coastline or beaches form 72km to a whopping 1500km by building the palm islands.
The palm islands consist of Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jabel Ali and Palm Deirah. Even before constructing this islands, Dubai built the most luxurious hotel in the world, The Burj Al Arab (Now Dubai’s National Symbol).
Dubai is not stopping its development strategies with these. Dubai is building an archipelago of 300 islands, The World which can be seen in the shape of a map of the World. Dubai announced the development of yet another land reclamation, Dubai water front. The construction of the 3 palm islands and the world are based on the same principles. [pic] Fig 1.2.
