1 Japan was overcrowded and low on raw materials
1 Japan seeked to become an empire and that led to war
2 Japan attacked China and caused a strain on their resources.This caused them to look towards Southeast Asia.
3 In August 1940, American discovered Japan’s plan to attack southeast Asia and feared for their control over the Philippines and Guam
4 Roosevelt stopped oil shipments to Japan, so they decided to attack the U.S. by surprise. The US fleet in Hawaii was the main target because it was “a dagger pointed at Japan’s throat”
5 December 7, 1941. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Nearly the whole fleet was sunk/damaged. 24,000 americans were killed.
6 December 8, 1941. US Congress declared war against Japan.
7 Japan had a streak of victories, gaining control of Gwan, Wake Island, Philipines, Hong Kong, Sinapore and many more. (Japan formerly wanted to be allies with other countries but they refused. )
8 April 1942. American bombed Japan. Not much damage was done, but Japan’s confidence was lowered.
9 Japan targeted Midway Island, west of Hawaii . Their plans were once again decoded by the US.
10 Japan strucj first and the US unleased planes, destroying 332 Japanese planes and all four aircraft carriers. US won. Turning point of war in Pacific.
11 General Douglas MacArthur, commander of Allied land forces, devised the plan of ‘island- hopping” This involved passing Japanese strong points and seizing weakly defended islands.
12 Japan was building an air base on the island of Guadalcanal. On August 7, 1942, US Marines along with Australian support landed on Guadalcanal and surrounding islands.
13 After six months of fighting, the Battle of Guadalcanal ended when Japan abandoned the island.
14 As new wars began and old ones ended, powerful weapons were being developed. A very powerful weapon created was the atomic bomb. The US heard that Germany was trying to create atomic weapons, American scientists followed. US won the race to
