Pablo Neruda
Poet Carl Sandburg stated, “Poetry is an echo asking a shadow to dance.” In Pablo Neruda’s poem “If You Forget Me” Neruda reveals the sorrows of losing your country or a person. Neruda does a fantastic job of using details such as crystal moon; red branch. He really paints a picture of the poem in your head. You can just imagine everything he is saying as if it were a painting in your head! Neruda knows how to touch a person’s feelings, similar to what one would feel about a person who had broken up with them but not over. It seems as if it were a warning almost, that is she doesn’t accept Neruda he will be gone, looking for new places to put his roots. Pablo really describes love and emotion well, how he felt for his lover. In the first stanza especially, “Everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats that sail towards those isles of yours that wait for me.” It has a very romantic tone from the language used.

Neruda’s poem “If You Forget Me” comprises of seven stanzas of unequal length. The first stanza initiates eagerness to read the rest of the poem, he leaves you at a cliff hanger; it consists of the stark lines: “I want you to know one thing” This in itself indicates that whatever it is that he wants to be known carries importance, to him or the person reading it. The second stanza explains how he feels about his country, and in the line “You know how this is” he makes it clear that the situation will become understood. Then he explains in the next few lines why: “if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window if I touch near the first the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log. Everything carries me to you. Pablo is explaining that he lives in a place of danger and a place of peace, whenever he is traveling or away, his home land is always on his mind. The theme is expressed in the final lines: “as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little sail boats that said towards those isles of yours that wait for me” Neruda did so much for his country, that’s explaining in the last lines, and how his country will always be there for him.

Neruda uses different kind of languages in this poem, not actual languages, but figurative and imaginative. Neruda paints a picture in your head as you read the poem. How he says crystal moon, meaning light and brightness, or even when he says red branch, red usually means passion or anger and in this poem, it could be taken either way. Love for the other person or hate for the other person because they are forgetting about them. Then in the fifth stanza he uses words that represent nature such as; wind, life, shore, roots, and land. In the sixth stanza Neruda uses words like destined, sweetness, flowed, lips, seek, fire, repeated, extinguished, forgotten, beloved, live, and without all represent the five senses touch, feel, hear, see, and taste.

In the poem “If You Forget Me” by Pablo Neruda he sets the situation as sadness, despair, and especially unrequited love, either from a person or his country. Neruda made this emotion clear with the word choices that he chose. Neruda explains in this poem that if someone or something forgets him he will also forget them due time. Neruda really knows what to say to get a person to understand what he was going through at that time. He knows how to snatch a person’s heart strings. He really gets the sadness and loneliness in the poem by a few key words such as; fire, autumn, ash, wrinkled, repeated, forgotten, and without. Neruda really works on using a lot of adjectives to make his writing more profound and detailed. He really is an amazing poet with the use of all of his words and descriptions.

In conclusion, I chose “If You Forget Me” because I resonated well with this poem. I enjoy this poem very much because of all the descriptions of love and emotion he feels. I personally found it intriguing how the middle of the poem, Neruda contradicts his deep emotional love with the statement “if suddenly you forget me, do not look for me, for I shall already have forgotten you.” The middle stanzas tell how easily love can be discovered or forgotten and how unattached a person can become if the person they are talking to does as well; but in the end Neruda switches once again to love and says, “But if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me…in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten, my love feeds on your love, beloved, and as long as you live it will be in your arms without leaving mine.” The way he ends this poem really moves me, because he’s saying how hard it would be to forget everything they went though and all the strong emotions they spoke of in the beginning of the poem.

The theme is of love and is that love is a powerful feeling that is a strong and amazing until it is broken. To go more into depth, I will tell the story of his life summed up and how the theme of the poem may go along with it. Now, the time period that Neruda was writing this in was definitely not a great time in his life. Neruda was a member of the Communist party and was criticized for his Chilean leadership. In 1948, he was forced into hiding and finally exiled for his actions, and the Communist party was banned in Chile. His poem was said to be most likely written during his exile because when it was published in 1952, this is when he returned home to Chile. So, it can always be about Chile and not his lover. This is a very good theory because it is highly plausible that he could stop loving Chile if Chile stopped loving or accepting him.…

    Francisco Goya

Through his art, Francisco Goya relayed his feelings toward the political unrest that plagued Spain during his lifetime. As an artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Goya lived through a time of political and social upheaval, especially throughout Europe. At the time, the ideas of the Enlightenment had captivated the minds of Spain’s most influential citizens and soon, that of Goya’s. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Francisco Goya came from very humble beginnings. As the son of a gilder, Goya grew up in the lower class of society, and even after his amazing success as court painter to Spanish royalty, he highly identified himself with the everyday Spaniard or majo. It is this very bond to the people that followed him throughout his life and career. Later, Goya’s portraits, drawings, etchings, and paintings would reflect an internal division that overcame him as his fame and fortune increased. Despite his future camaraderie with the Spanish elite, Goya’s early works often depicted the upper class as somewhat artificial or masked. In fact, this masked-ness is a motif in many of Goya’s works. The contrast between classes is illustrated throughout his tapestry cartoons. These cartoons accurately depict Spanish men and women doing a range of things from enjoying leisurely activities, working, and carrying out very Spanish traditions. Although Goya had a profound connection to his majos and majas, he also shared the beliefs of enlightened thinkers of the times. Figures like Jovellanos, minister to king Charles III, appealed to the other side of Goya. Jovellanos and other Spanish reformers would later be his patrons and comrades and they certainly did not advocate a traditional Spain or for the traditional views of the majevos. Goya’s artistic talents catapulted him to the top of his craft, however he did not forget his origins. Through his art alone, he illustrated the lives of Spaniards both rich and poor in a and time of struggle and…

In the poem ‘The Wood – Pile’ Robert Frost uses a very tight structure, it is a sum of one stanza which he has used in other poems such as “Out Out -”. This poem is first person narration, which is another thing that a lot of Frost poems share in common, the setting of the poem is introduced in the first line of the poem ‘the frozen swap’ this releases visual imagery straight away. The last two words of the first line of the poem ‘gray day’ Frost uses internal rhyme the theme of the poem is nature it is set outside and it also it involves tree’s and birds Frost tells the story using this as the stake and the prop is natural resources and the wood-pile is society and because we are using nature up, it is soon going to collapse.…

This represents the lost in the poem and what people are subconsciously thinking everyday. Lines 1 and 2 epitomize this meaning because it says, "Even when I forget you I go on looking for you." This leads on to how life is symbolized in the poem as well. People go their whole lives not realizing they are lost and need time to themselves to become the person they have the potential to be. Some follow behind others and are just a copy of the person next to them, in effect they are not their own person and the things they do are not of their true choice. This symbolism is conveyed in the last two lines as it says, "What they say you who are not lost when I do not find you." In conclusion you are not truly living life if you are not living as yourself and as the…

    Pablo Neruda's Use of Nature

    • 1541 Words
    • 45 Pages

The natural world is one that exists outside of all human constructs and limitations, and illuminates a valuable reality in the world. When considering Pablo Neruda’s body of work, a clear thematic focus on nature is visible. Many of his poems reference the natural, untouched world. This is a thematic juxtaposition to the over-structured, artificial nature of human culture. Using nature symbolically within these poems allows for a clear distinction to be drawn between the real and the artificial, and speaks to the flaws that Neruda sees within society. He brings to the reader’s attention the value of instinctual behavior and emotion, as well as the natural qualities of humans, women in particular, and the social constraints by which all people are bound. His disapproval and call for change is apparent. Neruda's use of natural symbolism within Walking Around and I Crave Your Mouth, Your Voice, Your Hair illustrates several separate issues of superficiality versus reality,…
