P1 – Explain key influences on personal learning processes of individuals

VAK Learning Styles
Introduction
VAK stands for Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic learning styles. VAK helps to provide a simpler way to help someone to understand their own learning styles. Everyone has different ways that they like to learn in and how effective that learning style is for them. Some people may have a more than one type of learning style. For example, during a previous lesson we took a questionnaire independently to find out what was the best learning style was for us and my results showed that I am a visual learner and I believe this to be true as I like to look at examples and watch video clips to help me to complete a task however I believe that I am a kinaesthetic learner as well as I like to be hands on with certain tasks. Visual Learner

Visual learning style usually involves the use of seeing something or observing something. Someone who learns visually would usually have characteristics like: need to be able to see something to be able to know it, have a strong sense of colour and may possibly have an artistic ability. People who learn visually may prefer activities like watching videos, looking at pictures and diagrams, watching demonstrations and looking at displays etc. For example, a task that someone might be asked to do is to cook a meal; a visual learner may follow a recipe to help them to complete this task.

Videos

PowerPoints
Videos are effective to a visual learner as they will be able to see for themselves and come up with their own theories and conclusion of what has happened in the video. For example, when I watched “Abuse in Winterbourne” I came to my own conclusion about Safeguarding.

PowerPoints are effective to a visual learner as they will be able to see the words for themselves and will be able to paraphrase and make notes from it. For example, when learning about communication the class went through a few PowerPoints and many of the students found it effective that we were able to make our own notes so that we were able to understand it better in our own words.

Auditory Learner
Auditory learning style usually involves the being able to learn through listening to what others are saying. The characteristic of an auditory learner may be needing to hear something to be able to known it and prefers to get their information by listening to others. Some people who are an auditory learner may prefer activities like listening to spoken words, being involved in group discussions and debates or listening to their lecturer during a lesson etc. For example, a task that someone might be asked to do is seek travel directions; an auditory leaner may ask someone else for spoken directions.

Lecturers (One to One)

Group Discussions
An auditory learner will be able to learn by having a one to one session with their lecturer as it will help them to be able to hear what the lecturer has to say about their work. The learner would then take that advice on board and try to better their own work. For example, when I got feedback from a lecturer I was able to remember what they had said and was able to edit my work to make it better.

An auditory learner will also be able to learn from being involved in group discussions as they will be able to learn through listening to what others have to say. An auditory learner may take notes during the group discussion so that they are able to remember what was said later on. For example, I have seen many group discussions and have been involved in some and I have noticed that some will sit back and take notes of what others are saying and some will only take part in the discussion.

Kinaesthetic Learner
Kinaesthetic learning styles usually involves doing the practical itself. The characteristics of a kinaesthetic leaner may be being more hands-on, may like to learn better by doing physical activities and are usually very well co-ordinated and...
