This demonstrates my commitment and capability to cope with challenging situations and be an effective team member. A hospital placement was an invaluable experience as I witnessed medical synchronisation by shadowing medics and how they form the backbone of science. My core subjects inspired me to do an EPQ on 'Can engineering help with the early diagnosis of dementia?'. My EPQ draws on many aspects, such as how advances in medical imagery can help diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier. Being a future ambassador of STEM and taking part in organisations like the 'Stemmettes' and 'WISE' has shown me that University will give me the tools to succeed in the biomedical industry. Through workshops I participated and had created 3D simulations and built artificial organs using technology and understood the necessity of using mathematical models to develop drugs. Being involved in the 'BP Day' allowed me to demonstrate practical and creative skills which in turn led me to win the title of 'Modern muse challenge for most original innovated designer for an app'. Not only did I feel proud for making interdisciplinary connections when explaining things, but I was also able to support my friends. My peers would walk into math tutoring completely clueless, but would walk out offering to teach others the material. The excited yells of kids who received As on tests for the first time was worth more than anything else I could’ve done in my free time. Beyond that, I realized support is a universal need. By believing in my peers’ ability, I helped them overcome hurdles that had been there for a long time. Most of all, contributing to the community wasn’t about the hours I put into it, but rather the effects that my service had. My actions can protect the future from the chaos of potentiality.…

My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident. To me, these daily obstacles seemed like the most essential to overcome, small successes that could greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.…

I believe that the one person that has the most influence in shaping my life is my grandmother. She has taught me how to be independent and courageous.
