Overcoming Obstacles In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Overcoming Obstacles Makes Better Individuals

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome” (Booker T. Washington). Obstacles are a required part of life if you wish to grow and develop. If you do not face challenges, you will not become a strong person. Individuals pushing to achieve the goals we set and overcoming the roadblocks ahead of us are what make us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and in my own personal experience, people encounter obstacles, and eventually overcome them. Ultimately, by overcoming obstacles, individuals will become more resilient and acquire new outlooks on people and life.

Said hurdles gave him new views, and made him more resilient. Darry faced an obstacle that was the same as Ponyboy, but he had to grow differently. That is the death of their parents. The death of their parents was obviously hard on Darry, but the big issue was that he was going to have to grow up quickly and become the head of his family's house. Darry was able to overcome the obstacles and become a tough but loving adult in his brother's life. Continuing on, another roadblock that Darry had to overcome was that he was no longer able to continue his education. Darry was about to go to college with a scholarship for football, but his parents' deaths meant he had to give up on this dream, and start making money for his family. Although this was obviously a hard decision for him, he was able to make it through and it resulted in him becoming who he was, being a hardy and caring individual. Lastly, Darry had to make sure he raised his younger brothers properly in order to guarantee that their futures remained bright. Darry continues to climb this barrier successfully by helping Ponyboy with his schoolwork as stated by Ponyboy “I didn’t do too badly in math, because Darry checked over my homework in that and usually caught all my mistakes and made me do it again.” (169). By continuing to successfully raise his brothers, Darry has also become more compassionate towards them, and understanding of …show more content…
One obstacle that I have overcome is that of having lived in so many places throughout my childhood. Throughout my young life, I have had to move upwards of five times. This has caused me to have a few friends from my young life that I am still in touch with. Although this has been hard, I have been able to overcome it, and each move has made me more resilient, and made me appreciate my recent life which has had less obstacles that I can't control. Furthermore, I have also had to overcome the roadblock that was having to live through the pandemic. Although I probably had it easier than some, it was still much more difficult than normal life. There were obviously many negatives with the quarantine, but there were also positives to come out of it. Having to adapt to working from home made me much more adaptive and resilient. And the lack of interaction really made me realize the importance of spending time with others. Thirdly, I am currently trying to overcome the obstacles that are trying to plan my future, including finding a college and a job. Although making these life changing decisions is difficult, it has made me realize many things. One such thing is how little time I have left in my childhood, and that I really appreciate the time I have left. And searching for a job has made me realize that many of those without jobs are

Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…

Obstacles and hardships are what shape a person. One of my many obstacles I had to face was getting use to my freshman year in high school. Due to me going to an Early college my freshman experience may have been a little different. Transitioning was one of the most difficult parts of the whole experience due to me not being able to really grasp what I had gotten myself into. My teachers were very firm in conducting their teaching strategies. I can recall a moment in time where I had turned in one of my first papers for my English class I was so excited for her to read it because I had worked all night on it trying to perfect it. A couple days passed and I got the paper back it was so many read marks on it if I didn't know any better I would…

Everyone will behave differently when they face adversity. Some of them might give up easily, or they fight with their courage instead of accepting adversity and tragedy. In True Notebooks, Mark Salzman shows us how the boys deal with obstacles. If those boys can’t overcome obstacles, obstacles overcome them. Therefore, they must persist in the end when they face adversity. Sometime, some of them are lucky to overcome obstacles by persisting in the end, but many of them can’t overcome obstacles because of the situation, or they don’t even want to overcome obstacles.…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

Introductory 1:Adversity is a common thing amongst the human-race. Almost everyone has had a problem once or twice in their life. For example, not everyone can agree on everything. Arguments amongst people aren’t rare, and almost every person has been a part of one. Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird had this exact adversity in her life. When she first went to school, she found different kinds of classmates with different views and opinions. She even butted heads with her teacher when she told Scout to stop reading. But, little did she know, that through these problems she had throughout her life were actually shaping her and helping her mature as a person. Most people see adversities as a bad thing, but humans need to have adversity to successfully…
