Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…

Beating something can require perseverance in many different ways. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is taken from his cozy home and put on a sled dog team. He fights with the lead dog, Spitz, often, until one time Buck finally beat him in a fight. On the other hand, my Gram went to college and took a speech class. She was afraid of speaking in front of a large group of people, so she used perseverance to help her control her decisions. While Buck and Gram are different, they were both afraid at one point and both beat a fear they had. Both Gram and Buck had to experience something new, whether it was fighting with another dog or going to college and talking in front of people.…

“By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.” That is what Christopher Columbus said when he was traveling from Europe to the new world. There are many things standing in ones way of prevailing. The most important thing to remember is that having worthy character traits such as the will to survive and courage will bring you through those obstacles. In the face of adversity, moral character causes some people to prevail while others fail.…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

Overcoming Obstacles Makes Better Individuals “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome” (Booker T. Washington). Obstacles are a required part of life if you wish to grow and develop. If you do not face challenges, you will not become a strong person. Individuals pushing to achieve the goals we set and overcoming the roadblocks ahead of us are what make us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and in my own personal experience, people encounter obstacles, and eventually overcome them.…

Obstacles are placed in our way to see if what we want is worth fighting for. I was eight years old when my best friend and I were sitting out in the front yard when a young man came up to us. After introducing himself, he asked us if we played sports, and at a young age, I expressed him that I wished to play volleyball on my school team when I was older. Even now, I reflect on that conversation and contemplate on how long I have had this dream to play on a volleyball team. Little did I realize my journey to playing competitive volleyball would be one with disappointments, obstacles, and a discovery of my abilities.…

Although success assured completely defeats the point of a “challenge” it is still important to take on the task, even though it becomes more of an activity rather than a challenge. After watching the clip “ Death Crawl” from the movie Facing the Giants by Alex Kendrick has many things people can get from it, but three of the most important things were, never give up, don’t doubt, and encouragement can help people be successful. First of all, one can overcome obstacles by not giving up. In the video the coach was constantly yelling at Broc to not give up and to give him all he’s got. Not giving up is important because it helps us keep an open mind about what we can do. Next, overcoming obstacles will be easier if we do not doubt. In the video Broc was saying that the team was not going to win the game. Doubting can keep people from reaching their goals because they will think that they can’t do it so they will not even…
