How to Overcome Childhood Traumas “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional,” is a Buddhist proverb. Everyone has had pain in their childhood. The pain can be as diminutive as finding out that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are a sham, or it can be as immense as being abandoned and abused by someone. Trauma can leave mental, physical, and emotional scars that last a life time. As you transition from childhood to adulthood, letting your past skeletons haunt you will hold back and keep you in self pity. Adults suffering from childhood traumas tend to self destruct themselves, but here are a few stages you can utilize to help overcome your childhood traumas to lead a healthy and happy life. First of all, you must gain self-awareness. Self-awareness allows you to understand yourself and re-evaluate your life. Before you reached this point, you were lost walking blindly with a “woe is me” attitude down a pothole infested road intertwined with cracks. Self-interest is doing things that interest you. The positive list you made in the beginning comes back into play. There are a lot of different activities you can do that are productive. Playing sports is a great way to release aggression. Think of doing contact sports like football, rugby, or even working out by yourself. Sometimes being able to hit people and get knocked around is the perfect remedy. If being physical isn’t something you like doing take a more spiritual and emotional route such as music, poetry, or writing. Start writing and using your word to express yourself. Since your trauma happened while you were a child you really couldn’t voice yourself because you fear and lack understanding of the event.     One main problem that often come out of traumatic experiences is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is seen throughout society and is characterized as re-experiencing the traumatic event through dreams, thoughts, sensations, or flashbacks. It also involves emotional numbing, avoidance of trauma provoking thoughts or activities, and a heightened sense of alertness or arousal. PTSD is most commonly seen when the maltreatment was received as a child. People go through hard times hiding it from the world; secretly hoping someone finds out about their story and helps them. There are many children throughout the world that do not know what it is like growing up with a normal parental figure. They go everyday living the life they live hoping to get out of it. Children that are abused or neglected go day after day worrying about when they will eat next, be looked at normal, feel special, and feel loved again. Children that grow up in an abusive/neglected household do not grow up with the correct way of parenting. In Damaged, Jodie is a child that has been abused since she was very young. She has been through foster home after foster home till she meets Cathy. In the third book, A Stolen Life, Jaycee is kidnapped at the age of eleven and is abused by her kidnapper Phillip. She has two of his children by the age of seventeen and is forced to live with the fact that she will possibly not be able to see her family again. All three of these books show us that even though you have multiple rough patches in your life, you can always find a reason to keep moving forward.     Each year in the United States several million children experience some extreme traumatic event. Some of these events include natural disasters, death of a loved one, vehicle accidents, physical and/or sexual abuse and witnessing domestic violence. Children are increasingly exposed to violence in society. Many of these children may develop some form of psychological problems that can significantly impair their emotional, academic, and social functioning. Research has noted that many of these children will become fearful of their environment and develop expectations that their future will be unhappy. These children are in need of interventions to help them develop productive modes of coping. Over the years there have been many therapies and interventions researched in treating children with various behavior, emotional and psychological problems. Many children are treated for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after witnessing traumatic events. It is my hypothesis that there is no one therapy alone, but that a combination of therapies would prove to be successful in helping children who have witnessed domestic violence. Also I believe that age, gender and severity of exposure will have an effect on how successful the intervention will be. Current literature addresses traumatic experiences that children have faced.
