When Amy Purdy was 19 years old, she moved to a place where it snowed. She became a massage therapist. She felt free, independent with complete control of her life because she can go anywhere she just needed her massage table and her hands. A couple of months later, adversity hit hard.“I lay in a coma that the doctors diagnosed me with bacterial meningitis, a vaccine-preventable blood infection. Over the course of two and a half months I lost my spleen, my kidneys, the hearing in my left ear and both of my legs below the knee” (Purdy). The level of adversity with Amy was hard core. Optimism and adversity balance each other out. Optimism moreover means believing in the future and adversity is a challenge that everyone goes through. When people face adversity, either they become depressed and refuse to do anything anymore with their life. occasionally people who are going through adversity face their obstacle and have optimism that they are going to be all right through whatever they're going through. If people don't have optimism they will start to fret and worry about their future because they don't have hope in their future. The Mayo clinic states, “Optimism is the belief that good things will happen to you and that negative events are temporary setbacks to be overcome”(Brody). Optimism makes people think positively throughout life. Negative things in life are just on this earth to test how people will react and deal with them. Constantly society will start to distress over things that they are able to do little or nothing about directly. This goes with the quote because negative things are just temporary and people start to fret over them accordingly they can't do anything about

It is about a young white boy named Phillip and a black man named Timothy and they are in the middle of World War 2 with America, Australia, Curacao and Great Brittan against Germany. They want to leave Curacao so they get onto a ship that is taking them to Miami but it is bombed on the way. As a result of this Timothy and Phillip meet because they happen to get on the same raft that leads them to the small Cay. Some of the adversities that are overcome are dealing with Phillip going blind, being shipwrecked and prejudice. Introductory 1:Adversity is a common thing amongst the human-race. Almost everyone has had a problem once or twice in their life. For example, not everyone can agree on everything. Arguments amongst people aren’t rare, and almost every person has been a part of one. Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird had this exact adversity in her life. When she first went to school, she found different kinds of classmates with different views and opinions. She even butted heads with her teacher when she told Scout to stop reading. But, little did she know, that through these problems she had throughout her life were actually shaping her and helping her mature as a person. Most people see adversities as a bad thing, but humans need to have adversity to successfully…

I noticed how people react differently while facing adversity in one of the books I read this year. In Lord of the Flies, a group of children land on an island from a plane crash with no adult supervision. At first they were calm and even thrilled at the idea of being on an island with no limits, as they assumed a rescue team was already on the way for their salvation. As days went by they noticed noone was coming to their rescue, and this brought out talents in every one of them. Adversity helped them discover within themselves leading skill, surviving skills, and how to cope with major responsibilities.…

How we handle adversity is what matters... Take a common scenario, therapy for example, in consideration when viewing adversity. In almost all situations the psychologist will let you pour out all your emotions and troubles (adversity). He or she will then ask you how you feel and offer words of wisdom. Then you’ll make your decision. The psychologist will usher concepts of “taking responsibility” and action. Whether or not someone heeds this advice is up to the person and the path taken will always shape someone’s character.…

Every man is born with either a silver spoon in his mouth or a shovel in his hand. If the former is the case, that individual can look forward to a life of relative ease and privilege. If it is the latter, however, the person had best prepare himself to dig through the pile of misfortune life is going to heap upon him. This is the balance of life--that for every man born under a shining sun, there is at least one born under ominous gray thunderclouds. Those individuals who have a natural inclination towards hard times do have a certain advantage, however, over those who always seem to have it easy. In this article they discuss a person’s reaction to adversity and how they should handle the situation. There are two feelings you can get when adversity strikes. You will either be in an emotional state of deflation (feel like a hero, able to fix any problem single-handedly). Or you will be in the other emotional state, which is, victimization (helpless bystander). Studies show that the ability to bounce back from adversity hinges on untangling a person’s embedded beliefs about it and shifting how they respond. There are 4 lenses and 3 types of questions you should ask yourself. The four lenses are Control (how much control we think we can have), Impact (can we turn things around), Breadth (how to limit the damages) and duration (how long will this last). The types of questions you should ask are specifying (helps you identify ways to intervene), visualizing (helps shift their attention from the adverse event towards a positive outcome) and collaborating questions (reach out to others for joint problem solving).…
