Overcoming Adversity In High School
A common theme throughout my high school career has been overcoming adversity, even when it did not seem possible to myself or others. During my freshman year, I developed an illness that caused me to miss school occasionally. Though it was difficult with advanced classes, I was able to get through it and maintain a grade point average of all A's and A-'s that I was very proud of.

Unfortunately, my health began to deteriorate during my sophomore year so much so that I had to take many classes online second semester. Still, I was determined to keep moving forward despite my illness and hospital visits. I was going to do everything I could in order to get back to my normal, rigorous schedule and friends that I loved.

My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects. It just reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to help other, despite the time it takes to do so. The overall time I have sacrificed to do these extracurricular activities inside and outside of school has all been well worth it. No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…

In my essay, I went over how I overcome failure on a daily basis, and how I made the best out of a bad situation. The quote, “When life gives you bad hops, make great plays,” describes the situation with my back injury. This is because when the injury occurred I didn’t get down on myself I turned it into an opportunity to try new things, and to have fun supporting my team. I also described how I overcome failure on a daily basis by keeping a positive…

I worked extremely hard during that time to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.82. I kept up with all school work and the commitments I made to clubs, sports, and volunteer work. While most people would have given up and lost hope, I was determined to wake up everyday and do as much as I physically could to keep up with the rest of my peers. I wanted to still participate in high school and experience all it had to offer. After junior year, I dedicated ten weeks of my summer vacation to take two college courses. I achieved an “A” in both courses for an overall 4.0 GPA to start my college career. I took these, not just to get a taste of what college is like, but to make up for the time I missed in class during high school. I still wanted to learn as much as I could and seized every educational opportunity during my new found healthy life. With my treatment plan and the support from my family, I am able to live an active life and I am proud to say that I never let my illness stop me from living a successful…

She first begins by recalling the goals she once had throughout high school and what measures she took to try and reach them. Her biggest goal in high school starting from freshman year was to obtain a 4.0 GPA and letter in academics. She studied awfully hard and really focused on her academics to attempt to achieve her goal. Unfortunately she did not reach this goal, “I got very close, having all A’s and one B my sophomore year,” she says disappointedly. However, it seems that she has made her way passed it as she says, “It was kind of devastating if I’m honest, but I mean what can I do now, I’ve moved on.” This then lead to a description of how the triumphs and trials she encountered helped her to be more prepared to face the world after high school. She describes high school as “just another four years of my life,” and that what took place then doesn’t really affect her regularly today. “High school showed me that if life brings you down, you will get back up, move on, and get through it; there is always a new tomorrow.”…

For some people the start of high school is an exciting new change in their life. This story was very different for me because I had a horrible start to my high school career. I was faced with a problem. I grew up in a small town, and I went to a very small middle school. Living in a small town meant that everybody knew everybody. There was not one person I didn’t know that went to my middle school. Even though growing up in a small school was a great experience because everybody knew each other it caused me to face the most difficult challenge of my life which was change.…

The biggest obstacle I have overcame in my life was attending college at a four-year school. While my family had a decent income, some spending decisions and my parent’s desire for me to “make it on my own” meant I had to pay for whatever education I acquired on my own. This was made more difficult because their income disqualified me from multiple scholarships. Another problem was that the quality of education offered by my local schools was not very high. We weren’t offered AP classes and had to take almost identical classes since the school just couldn’t afford to offer much else. These classes often lagged far behind most standards anyway because many students in the class had no interest in learning or their quality of education up…

How I have become the person I am today stems from my empathy I have towards life itself and how fragile it is. Over the last 5 years I have suffered a tremendous loss of life in my family. Thru those trying times when I thought I couldn’t make it thru, my parents instilled in me that those events were making me stronger, thus allowing me to always continue going despite the ups and downs in life. I have a desire in me to always positively move forward towards my goals no matter any perceived obstacles in sight. I believe the person I am today will enhance the values at Towson University, not simply by allowing me prove that the words in this essay are not just words, but as a sincere person always willing to go beyond what required to make…

Education has always played one of the most challenging parts of my life. It has become even more of a struggle with the other priorities in my life such as work and my hockey club team. I always try my best to get around to these events while at the same time, try to avoid the worst possibilities-like not having a source of transportation or falling behind schedule with another event. These issues of rides and time can occur often but I do learn to work with what my sources are, which is hardly anything, and somehow manage to be okay at the end of the day.…

There have been many events throughout my life that have shaped and defined the person I am today. The most impactful moment of my life transpired when I was pursing my B.S. in Physics & Mathematics at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Like any college year each year presents its onset of obstacles and challenges to overcome. My third year of undergrad was without question the most odious of my four year matriculation. Between four hour labs and courses such as Quantum I, Thermodynamics and Electromagnetic Theory it can be very difficult to maintain a high level of performance academically. This period of my life truly tested my belief in the power of the human spirit to preserve through all hardships and success. The journey I embarked on during that semester was like a transformation, where pressure was applied constantly to test my resolve.…
