“The Most Dangerous Game” Essay

Rainsford washes up on the shore of General Zaroff’s island. He meets Zaroff and finds out that he has been hunting humans for sport. When Rainsford refuses to hunt with Zaroff, he turns against him. Now Rainsford is the one who is being hunted. This story is trying to point out that life is made of the weak and strong and in the end, you become as dangerous as the thing you once feared.

First off, Whitney and Rainsford speak about the idea of weak and strong in terms of hunting animals. Rainsford says that animals have no feelings, but Whitney disagrees. He says that hunting is fine for the hunter, but not for the jaguar. Then, later Rainsford becomes the prey instead of the hunter. Rainsford

    The obvious conflict to the reader is the external conflict of man versus man. Zaroff determined to prove his skill as a hunter hunts Rainsford, while Rainsford fights against Zaroff to stay alive. Likewise, Rainsford and Zaroff also differ from the other in terms of their ideology, where Zaroff believes that hunting humans for sport is natural, and Rainsford disagrees. The subtle external conflict is the conflict of man versus nature, where Rainsford must battle against the conditions of the jungle to elude Zaroff. In addition to the external conflicts, Connell also includes the internal conflict of man versus himself in this story with Rainsford. Rainsford has the difficulty to make himself continue on in the hunt while in a state of fear and fighting in the external conflict of the jungle around him.     In this scene it is the good natured Rainsford who is taken in by the General and treated with dinners, new clothes, and what he hopes is a good conversation with a fellow hunter. However, the contrasting mindset of Zarroff is quickly provided to Rainsford and the true nature of this man is beginning to set in for Rainsford when he realizes that he soon will be the prey.     In The Most Dangerous Game, Connell describes Rainsford, the protagonist, as a renowned hunter. Connell uses the opening conversation between Rainsford and Whitney, Rainsford’s companion on the yacht, to enlighten the reader to Rainsford’s attitude of indifference concerning the prey that he hunts. As fate would have it, Rainsford is marooned on an island where he meets another hunter, General Zaroff. As the story progresses, Rainsford begins to see the façade of civility disappear and the real nature of the General come to surface. The General explains how hunting man is the logical progression of their art and that they are actually kindred souls. Rainsford is appalled by the comparison of their two natures and clings to the moral high ground. That is until the General forces Rainsford to now become the prey. Rainsford, now the prey, calls upon not only his vast knowledge and experience of the hunt but also his primeval instinct of survival. Connell takes the reader through many twists and turns giving hope for Rainsford around each corner only to take it away.
