With a touch of humor, geology, evolutionary theory, biology, cartoon characters and even some references to baseball, The Panda's Thumb definitely makes excellent reading for people with all types of interests. The old cliché, "Don't judge a book by its cover," or in this case, title, holds true for The Panda's Thumb. Theories concerning adaptations of the panda are only a fraction of the many exciting facts held within the pages of this publication. Gould is able to put what he writes about in words that are easy to understand without compromising the quality of the information. Many questions are raised in this book. Some questions that science just can't answer at the moment. Time is a major theme in some of the essays in The Panda's Thumb. I found these essays of utmost interest.…

It seems that red pandas eat on the ground. the red panda may live alone, in pairs, or in family groups. Red pandas primarily eat bamboo leaves and fresh shoots, as well as berries, blossoms, bird eggs, and various plants' small leaves. They have a small, bony projection on their wrists that helps them grip bamboo stalks. Giant pandas also have this thumb-like adaptation. The litters generally contain one or two young that are born in spring after a gestation period of about 130 days. The animal is gentle and easily tamed but usually resents being handled. It is a very popular zoo animal and is frequently involved in the animal…

One hypothesis for the dark fur is that it may help reduce glare and enhance the night time vision. The species has grayish brown fur that helps them stay warm in cooler environments. The five toes on a raccoon’s front paws are extremely skilled, functioning like five little fingers which allow it to grab and handle food it finds in the wild as well as a variety of other objects including locks, jars, and remotes. The uncommon things are the fur, height, weight, length, and size. Many raccoon species like mine have many different dimensions, and sizes. Some are smaller than a house cat and some are way bigger than a house cat. They also have 5-8 rings on their…

On Wednesday September 16th of 2015, I will be going to the Smithsonian National Zoo with a group of my friends. The Zoo was founded in 1889. It is one of the oldest zoos in the world. There are 1800 animals that live in the zoo. One of the most famous spots in the zoo for tourists to see is the Giant Panda exhibit. The giant pandas recently just gave birth to baby pandas. I have only been to the Smithsonian National Zoo once. I went in eighth grade for a school wide field trip. I love seeing animals and going to the zoo. Back where I am from (Delaware) there are not any zoos or big public attractions for young kids and teenagers.…

Pandas have the ability to turn bamboo into food energy, however this is not easy. For example, “Unlike most plant-eating animals, pandas have inefficient digestive systems that cannot easily change plants into food energy. As a result, pandas must eat large quantities of bamboo. For example, giant pandas eat as much as 85 pounds (39 kilograms) of bamboo shoots per day.” (Swaisgood, Ronald. "Panda." World Book Student, World Book, 2017, www.worldbookonline.com/student/article?id=ar412700. Accessed 22 Nov. 2017.). Despite the fact that a panda’s diet is based on bamboo they cannot survive on merely bamboo. This means that inorder to survive on only bamboo they must eat a substantial amount. Since panda’s have an inefficent digestive system they cannot survive on only bamboo. For instance, “Ninety-nine percent of their diet consists of bamboo. They also eat other plants and meat that they can scavenge and will eat a variety of foods in captivity.”(Pandas. By: Clamon, Laura A., Salem Press Encyclopedia of Science, 2016). This helps panda’s digestive system and allows them to get enough nutrition. Nonetheless, most of a panda’s diet is based on…

The Arctic Fox is a cute ball of white fluff. They are the size of a cat. They have short ears and legs; they have fur on the bottom of their feet, to keep their feet warm when they walk in the snow. Their fur coats are white in the winter months; this helps them blend in with the snow to protect them from their enemies. Brown – grey in the summer months, so then they look like the rocks and plants that grow in the tundra. The fox has a big bushy tail that they use for balance just like a cat. They also use their long bushy tail to keep them warm when they are sleeping. They have cute little faces, with a black nose and pretty brown eyes. They are one of my favorite animals.…

Can you imagine staring at a screen for four years? The average human will spend four years total staring at their phone, if not more (Doc 7). With the technological advancements our world grew to, our people followed in the growth. By doing so, our human emotions are being replaced with “like” and “dislike” buttons, and our brains only want to learn something if it’s within the first three links in a Google search engine. Students and parents should limit their use of cell phones because they isolate our emotions, they negatively affect our body and mind, and keep us seperated from relationships with people.…
