Our Stars Hero's Journey Essay

Both the The Fault in Our Stars and Andy’s adventure follow the archetype of the “Hero’s Journey”. Hazel and and Andy have very similar plots where they both go to find the author of their favorite book/books. To start off Andy, Andy had a difficult life as a teen, he would check out of school and had a bad relationship with his step father. He hated his so much that he longed to live somewhere else, perhaps the home of his favorite author, Piers Anthony. Once he realized that he didn’t care about school anymore that was the start of his journey. From reading all the stories of Anthony’s he matched them up with the real world, and got Florida. After getting a hefty amount of cash from the bank he ran away, instead of walking into school, he walked into his new adventure. At the airport, he buys a ticket to Orlando and soon finds the house with help from cab drivers and supermarket workers. After his arrival to Anthony’s house he is told he can not stay with Anthony and he could either be a run away or return home. Andy realized that life was that bad and that he would go back. He didn’t just go to meet Anthony he wanted to live with him. Andy’s adventure was really about finding a new perspective on life and that his life wasn’t so bad. With Hazel’s journey it wasn’t about some hamster in a book it was to see if there was something after death. John Green uses An Imperial Affliction to foreshadow what happens after Augustus dies which is the unknown. Hazel wanted to know what happened after the death of the character with cancer, so she would know how her parents and friend who feel after her death. This book shed light on the realities of cancer and she connected it with her own life but didn’t think it was for what was going to happen.
