Our place in the Universe
Our Place in the Universe Science is the process of creating ideas and the “what” and “how” of the universe. What is our place in the universe? How did we end up here? What even is the universe? To start off, I define the universe as all matter and energy that exists. Our cosmic address in the universe begins at our galaxy in the local group, which is an island of stars in space held together by gravity and all orbiting a common center. Besides our galaxy there are about 40 other galaxies in our own local group. Our galaxy, The Milky Way galaxy then goes on to our solar system. Within the solar system there are 100 billion stars, the biggest being the sun. The star is a large glowing ball of gas that generates heat and light through nuclear fusion and orbiting it are 8 planets. The third planet from the sun is planet Earth, our planet. The only planet from which we know can sustain life therefore us, human beings. This aspect of our universe still doesn’t tell us exactly HOW we came to be. Although we don’t exactly know the answer to this, we can get extremely close to the beginning of time starting with the Big Bang Theory. The Big Bang Theory is the theory that the universe started with an explosion of matter at high densities and temperatures. The Big Bang expansion occurred about 13.4 billion years ago consisting of several different stages of development. After the explosion came inflation and afterglow light patterns. The period of darkness afterward known as the dark ages then turned into the creation of some of the first stars about 400 million years ago. Thus, the further away we look, the further away in the past it is. Another mystery about our universe is if we can actually see all of space. Since the universe is 14 billion years old, if we try and look 15 billion light years then we would be trying to look before the universe existed and wouldn’t possibly be able to see anything.
And to just think that our universe is still expanding today…

In this society today, science is a method of discovering how things will impact what will happen in our future. However, scientific discovery is getting the correct information through a process or steps. It also is the observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena (free dictionary). Science is expanding the knowledge of the world around us to make sure that the knowledge of science is available.…

Astronomers combine mathematical models with observations to develop workable theories of how the universe was made. Albert Einstein’s General theory of relativity along with standard theories of fundamental particles. NASA’s spacecraft the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope continue measuring the expansion of the universe. One of the goals are to figure out if the universe will expand forever or will it stop, turn around, and collapse in a “Big Crunch.” If we were to look at the universe one second after the Big Bang, what we would see is a 10 billion degree sea of neutrons, protons, electrons, anti-electrons, photons, and neutrinos. Then as time passes we would…

Cosmology is the branch of study in relation to the origin and nature of the universe (Farlex, 2012). The thoughts and opinions on how the universe began over the years was one of spiritual and scientific. Through beliefs of the Bible and followers of the faith it is believed that God created the universe and everything in it. From a scientific view it is believed that the universe was created by The Big Bang. Throughout time many astronomers and scientists pushed the envelope to prove that the universe was not created by God but instead created by one force in space that over time has further developed what is on Earth and out in the universe. Most of the scientists and astronomers back in time were followers of the religion and almost had their own beliefs lead them into the wrong direction. It was not until such people as Galileo, Copernicus, and Sir Isaac Newtown that further proved The Big Bang Theory caused the creation of the universe.…

In my opinion, there is nothing farther from the truth when you say we are the center, or most important thing, of the universe. If you actually look at us we are nothing more than a disease, not much different than any other ordinary one. Every day land is destroyed and animals lose their homes so that we, the human race, can simply live in comfort. Every day we are multiplying, and every year the birth rate is increasing as we grow in numbers. Is this not the same thing that the common cold or any other type of disease does? You can even compare our attempts at space exploration to a disease in the beginning stages of going airborne and trying to spread itself to another host, or planet in this…

In 1929 an astronomer named Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding the same in all directions and from this conceived the Big Bang Theory (Craig 30). Everything in the universe is expanding outward. This implies that at some point in the past the entire known universe was contracted down to a single mathematical point. The further back one goes in the past, the denser the universe becomes, so that one finally reaches a point of infinite density. From this point of infinite density,…

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before”, a quote from star trek, the TV series famous for its technological predictions that illustrates a possible future for mankind. From the beginning of man, billions of individuals have been staring up at the night sky, wondering what its purpose was and how it worked. The universe has been a mysterious place for thousands of years until more recently where the stars and planets were not being referred to as ‘gods’, but as large land masses and giant balls of gas all made up of millions of little…
